Very sad to hear yesterday that a Tassie icon – the famous lone tree at Binnalong Bay – has fallen down due to strong winds. May seem like an odd thing to care about, but for me this tree means a few things to me: not only was it a beautiful photogenic location, it was one of the first photos I wanted to get when I became a landscape photographer. Little places like these are a goldmine for photographers, and I'm sad to say I'll never tick off this location on my astro bucket list.
I remember when I took this photo. It was the only time I've visited here, and I had great conditions predicted. 100% high cloud for sunset, clear skies or astro, and 100% high cloud again for sunrise. The sunset was beautiful, but I had trouble finding the tree so I struggled to get a good composition. The clouds didn't end up clearing for astro, which was very disappointing. A few stars poked out but nothing I could use. I slept in the back of a sedan with my feet in the boot through the middle seat. It was the most uncomfortable sleep I've had. The clouds them seemed to not want to stick around for sunrise, and I only got a few close to the horizon. Overall, I didn't walk away with any useable shots.
Yesterday, I revisited this shot that I'd tried to edit a few times over the 2 years since I took it. I'm quite happy with how this one has finally turned out, and it's a shame I'll never get another attempt.
If anyone wants to plant a new one, that'd be great! 😜
