You can’t just look at the thing itself; you have to look at the light on it. — Galen Rowell, because light is often the true subject even when the object gets the credit. On your next walk, ignore the obvious subjects first and look only for where the best light is falling.

Your eyes stop seeing subtle problems when you stare at the same edit too long, because visual fatigue makes poor decisions feel normal. Step away for five minutes during your next edit and come back to see whether the tones still feel balanced.

Trivia: the first colour photo was made in 1861 by James Clerk Maxwell. Did you know that? What’s the oldest camera you’ve ever shot on? 📷

A distant background can transform a wildlife image more than a longer lens sometimes can, because separation creates calm and keeps the subject from fighting visual noise. When possible, shift your angle until the background falls further away and watch how much cleaner the frame becomes.

Rainy days only mean one thing….. edits complete and posts incoming.

This one was captured from One Tree Hill in Maleny during a trip where the plan was completely different. I’d packed the gear with long shutter cloud shots in mind, only to realise I’d left my ND filters behind.

Normally that would have been enough to ruin the plan.

Then this rolled in.

The clouds began building over the Glass House Mountains, the light broke through for a few brief moments, and suddenly the lack of filters didn’t matter. The drama overhead became the story. Sometimes the best images come from adapting to the conditions rather than forcing the shot you originally had in mind.

The lone tree, the last light catching the trunk, and those towering storm clouds made for one of those moments where you simply stop shooting for a second and appreciate what’s unfolding in front of you.

It’s a good reminder that photography isn’t always about having the perfect kit. Sometimes it’s just about being there when nature decides to put on a show.

Ocean photographs feel stronger when they show respect for the water, not just beauty, because the sea is both subject and force, and the image should carry some of that truth. For World Oceans Day, make one frame that shows movement, scale, or fragility in a way that goes beyond a pretty view.

A tripod is only as stable as the thought you put into where its legs land, because poor footing can ruin a sharp image long before the shutter fires. Before you commit to a composition, check each leg for solid footing and adjust the stance until the camera feels planted rather than balanced.

Some places are remembered through colour before they are remembered through shape, because climate, light, and atmosphere can create a visual identity all their own. For Queensland Day, build one image around colour first and let the subject support the palette instead of the other way around.
