Bush to Creek Birders

Bush to Creek Birders We are avid birders that enjoy taking photos of nature, birds and wildlife. Occassionally we go further a field on longer vacations.

Some are from our property, others from Reserves and locations that we travel to in and around Maryborough, QLD.

Last weekend our camping adventure took us to Cania Gorge NP, near Monto (QLD), on a quest for the Rose Robin. Alas, the little pink & grey fluff-ball aluded us on our many varied trail walks.

However, we did manage to identify 54 confirmed bird species, 2 of which were new to us, and a couple of suspect ones. Considering the cold and gloomy weather, we felt this to be a very successful bird watching weekend. We highly recommend visiting Cania Gorge NP and staying at the Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat as a base. Whether a bird watcher, hiker or camping enthusiast, this is a great place.

The photos were taken mainly with my Canon EOS 90D 100-400mm lens, whilst the Apostlebirds were with Darlene's Canon EOS 250D 18-35mm lens. Below are some of the birds we managed to capture in action.

A beautiful morning spent wandering the Wongi Waterholes (instead of fishing), thanks to my brother Greg's suggestion, and a revisit to Lenthalls Dam, was todays outing. They say Birders often see the best birds in the carpark, but this time it was at the toilets after we had finished 🤦‍♂️. A pair of White-eared Monarchs were feeding around the entrance and put on a captivating display. To the weirdos who wondered why two people were hanging around a toliet block with cameras, you've never met birders, I say.

The walk around the Wongi Waterholes was not particularly productive with only 14 bird species counted. That said, we did see a loverly Fantail Cuckoo and watched as some female Fairywrens hunted for food.

We popped over to Lenthalls Dam at tea-time and were immediately confronted with numerous birds. The piercing crack of the Eastern Whipbird echoed loudly and we hadn't even got out of the car. The species count was 22, but the highlight was the White-eared Monarch, a first time spotting for us. All-in-all, a special winter's morning counting 29 species, breathing fresh air and catching vitamin D.

The last of the really big dragon fruit plant cleanup happened yesterday (aching today 😣) but people often ask, what are you going to do or plant now???

Our response, NOTHING 😜 have a life, just enjoy our property!!!

36acres that boarders a creek & land that doesn’t need much (ala natural) we have plenty to explore, enjoy & watch in our own “backyard” as it were.

Allan has been making some tracks to better enjoy some of the vantage spots & I am working a plan on some viewing seating spots scattered around the property.

Today we tested the new tracks & were treated to Scarlet Honeyeaters, Varied Trillers, Pheasant Coucal, Butcher Birds, Grey Fantails, Redbacked Fairy Wrens, Rufous Whilster, Rainbow Bee Eaters, Black Faced Cuckoo-Shrike, Rainbow Lorikeets, Noisy Miner, Common Myna, W***y Wagtails, Kookaburras, Magpies, Wood Ducks, Blue Faced Honey Eaters, Twany Grassbird, Lewins Honey Eater, Brown Honey Eater, White Throated Honey Eater, Spangled Drongo and White Throated Tree Creeper. 🐦

Wowsers & we thought it was a quiet morning.

If you love nature & especially birdwatching or want to practice some photography, sing out & come for a visit. Might even pop the kettle on fir you 🫖 🍰

Why travel when we have 36 acres of our own backyard to explore. Today didn't disapoint as we headed into our far 11 acre paddock and spotted close to 30 species of birds, 3 of which are new to our property list (we are now at 92 species)!!

The lengths Allan will go to to get a shot, committed to the process 😆
