My name is Insos, I am a proud West Papuan Woman with roots in both Melanesia and the Shetland Isles of Northern Europe. My parents met at Freeport’s Grasberg mine, a place notorious for workplace deaths and a staggering environmental footprint. Colonial frontier violence was the catalyst for my birth, reverberating through my early life in the form of DV and psychological abuse. But this does not define me. My strength is anchored in remembering the wisdom, resilience and mana of my ancestors. Ambitious sea faring people who were in deep communion with the motions of the oceans and the stars, as they navigated the darkness. Whose prayers of Aroha carried through the wind and waves. Today I seek to honour them by studying with a decolonising lens, reconciling the past so as to resource the future. 🫶🏽
