Janine McGuinness Art Official Janine McGuinness art page Janine's contemporary fine art photographic practice have often been highly experimental.

Works are often disorienting images of natural spaces that serve as metaphors for emotional and psychological experiences. The transience and memory of self and place have also been strong themes in her work. She has won or been listed for various awards - e.g., Galloway Lawson Prize; Lumen Prize longlist - and has regularly exhibited in artist-run galleries.

About

I am a contemporary artist working out of DIGHT Creative Studios in Collingwood, (Melbourne) Australia. My practice concerns the politics of visibility in photography and digital art and the relationship of people, place and space. Obscurity in suburban landscapes has been a particular interest.

Exploring aspects of visibility and obscurity, works are highly transformed rather than aiming to be realistic and since 2018, my practice has included overpainted photographs as well as overpainted, moving images. That is, my own photographic prints or moving images actually form the canvas for my painting. Once overpainted, works can then sometimes be re-photographed and printed once again or left as they are. Works are a variety of sizes and use a variety of mediums and paints as well as different canvas surfaces such as aluminium, fine art paper or fabric.

When I paint visual frames over photographs and video and transform images, I feel I am able to explore different temporal, social and spatial frameworks and processes and I am able to investigate new forms of ‘digital painting’.
