Blind double exposures on my way to exploring ideas of memory, care and the psychological space between mother and child.

Rochelle Tissa is a Naarm/Melbourne-based artist working primarily with analogue photography. Drawing from lived experience, her practice examines the psychological space between mother and child, using the maternal gaze as a site of observation, memory and projection. Through an intuitive, documentary approach, Tissa considers the tension between what is seen, what is felt and what is imagined.

A little bit thrilled to share that I’ve been selected as a semi-finalist in the 2026 Head On Photo Awards.

It means a great deal to have my work recognised amongst such a strong field of photographers.

Thank you to the Head On Photo Festival team for continuing to create opportunities for photographic work to be seen and celebrated, and to this year’s judges for the time and consideration given to the work.

A huge congratulations to all of the other semi-finalists. I’m very grateful to be included alongside you.

The semi-finalist exhibition will be showing digitally at Bondi Pavilion Gallery from 7–29 November.

A little bit of exciting news ✨

I’m so thrilled to have received two Highly Commended awards in The Mono Awards for Apparition and Resting Place.

It’s always a vulnerable thing putting your work out into the world to be judged, so to have both of these photographs recognised feels incredibly special.

These images are both very close to me and reflective of the kind of work I’m continually drawn to making.

Feeling very grateful for the recognition, and perhaps a little more encouraged to keep trusting my own eye and making the work that feels true to me.

Apparition — Highly Commended
Resting Place — Highly Commended

There’s a personal backstory to my connection with this beautiful Mumma.

After my own difficult birth, Hannah, a paediatrician, made the time to stop by and check in on us after my daughter had been taken into emergency care just hours after she was born. In those overwhelming first hours of motherhood, seeing a kind, familiar face was deeply comforting as I tried to navigate this completely new terrain. Her kindness in that moment has never left me.

Years later, being asked to photograph Hannah during the pregnancy of her second child, with a family session to follow, felt particularly meaningful.

There’s something very special about the way our lives can circle back to one another. To now have the opportunity to document this chapter of her motherhood, after the care she showed me at the very beginning of mine, feels like a beautiful kind of full circle.

Thank you, Hannah, for trusting me with these photographs. 🤍
