Ospreys are brilliant opportunists, and this one had me fooled completely. I was convinced it had pulled an eel or fish from the water, but after watching it circle for a minute or two, it banked back toward the nest site with this long strand of kelp still trailing from its talons. Nesting material, not a meal.

Ospreys weave all kinds of organic material into their nests, seaweed and kelp being common additions in coastal locations like this. I'm told the nest that was being added to actually withstood the last cyclone.
