Tree Candling 🔥

A method used to reduce fire hazard and lower the intensity and impact of bushfires. In this case, burning the bark of stringy bark trees to reduce their excessive fuel load. A great opportunity to see this in action from the CFA.

White Wallaby, a genetic mutation of the Bennett's Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus).

Prior to our Tasmania trip in 2025, we had heard about the population of white wallabies on Bruny Island. With only 3 days on the island we were hoping to see them.

On our final day we were starting to give up hope. A last minute decision to not walk up to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse and to instead cruise back to our accommodation meant a chance encounter with this white wallaby who was in a paddock on the side of the road.

Australian Fur Seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus)

Did you know the Australian Fur Seal was almost hunted to extinction? In the 1800s it was common for this Seal to be hunted for its fur resulting in a population drop from hundreds of thousands to around 20,000.

Luckily their populations have increased since the banning of Seal hunting in Australia in the 1970s.

Long-Nosed Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri)

One of two species of fur seals we saw on our wildlife cruise off Bruny Island. This species is listed as rare in Tasmania under the 'Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995' and listed as vulnerable in Victoria under the 'Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988'.

Australian Fur Seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus)

A recent trip with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys from Bruny Island saw us heading towards where the Tasman Sea meets the Southern Ocean. The waters were very choppy where we stopped to view the Australian Fur Seals out on the rocks.

This species is the largest of all the fur seals, reaching up to 2.5 metres in length and adult males weighing up to 100kg.

Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle (Aquila audax fleayi)

Considered a subspecies of the Australian mainland wedge-tailed eagle, this species can grow much larger with a wingspan of up to 2.8 metres. It is also considered endangered in the state of Tasmania.

On our recent trip to the state we were lucky enough to see three individuals. This was the only one I was lucky enough to get a photo of on Bruny Island. It flew straight in front of our car before landing in a tree in the adjacent field.

Juvenile Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua)

The largest owl in Australia, the powerful owl is listed as vulnerable in Victoria under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act (1988).

Today we were lucky enough to see three, an adult mother and two juveniles. 🦉

“When you realise the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future.” - Dian Fossey.

A few weeks ago I went to Melbourne Zoo to practice taking photographs of animals/wildlife and these were some of the results. I wanted to try something a little bit different from my other photographs and put more focus into producing some black and white shots.

Zoos Victoria

As someone who has always loved animals and is now studying Wildlife and Conservation, I'm hoping to combine this with photography in the future and show people how important and beautiful wildlife is.
