🕸️ Monday Morning Trigger Warning!!!🕷️

This is the Garden Orb-Weaver (Eriophora transmarina)!! During the day, they tuck themself away, blending perfectly into their surroundings until nightfall. These nocturnal web artists spin their iconic circular webs at dusk, patiently waiting for unsuspecting prey. While they might look intimidating up close, they’re harmless to humans but are vital for keeping insect populations in check.

This Praying Mantis may look like it’s deep in thought, but it’s actually sizing up its surroundings - and me - with 360° vision! Those large, forward-facing compound eyes give it binocular vision and depth perception, perfect for locking onto prey with deadly precision. The tiny dot you might see in each eye are called pseudopupils, and always appears to be looking directly at you.

On top of its head, you’ll notice antennae that help it detect movement and vibration. Some species also have ocelli (simple light-sensing eyes between the antennae) that help them stay oriented.

Mantises are true masters of the ambush, relying on camouflage and patience. They’ll sit perfectly still, blending into leaves or stems, then strike with those powerful, raptorial forelegs when prey gets too close!

How crazy are insects?! 🤯🤯🤯

I love diving into the world of macro photography, especially insects, because it gives me the opportunity to see how they've evolved so uniquely to overcome challenges in their environments and habitats.

Here are a few of my favourite macro shots from the past few - whats your favourite? 🤩🪲🐌🦋🐜🕷️🐝

This tiny alien-looking insect is a Planthopper Nymph, most likely from the Ricaniidae or Flatidae family. Its fluffy, wax-like filaments aren’t just for flair - they help break up the insect’s shape, making it harder for predators to spot or grab.

These nymphs might only be a few millimetres long, but they’re highly agile and capable of jumping impressive distances which made taking this photo really difficult 😂

This little tank of a beetle crash-landed into my van while I was in the Cathedral Ranges. It was really clumsy as it tried to get back outside, buzzing loudly like a tiny drone. After I moved it outside, it started making these deep, pulsing vibration sounds. Turns out, it’s most likely a Rhinoceros Beetle (Dynastinae subfamily), a nocturnal burrower that uses these vibrations to right itself if it lands on its back or as a defence mechanism. Such an odd little creature, but seriously cool to watch up close!
