How Epic Studios Came to Be

In 2013 Chris and I took the lease on this amazing building. It has a rich history in the fashion world, serving as home to Riva Fashions as a textiles manufacturing centre in the height of Australia’s fashion boom, and then it was the photography studio of legendary, eccentric 80s photographer Eryk Fitkau. People still drop in to tell us stories of Eryk’s adventures.

Just before we took it over it had been gutted to be used as a gym. This meant we had to rebuild everything inside from the cyclorama to the offices. We designed the space with the studio as the main priority. It takes up about a third of the total space of the building, and can be completely closed off for privacy. As you can imagine, the cost of leasing a large warehouse in such a prime position is substantial. To offset this cost we built in 10 3m x 3m offices. The labour was full on and we spent three months planning, building and decorating the place before it was finally ready for use.

During our time, Epic has been home to some amazing businesses. Officeholders in our space tend to be businesses in a growth phase. They usually come in with a couple of staff and then outgrow us a couple of years later when they move to bigger offices. We love being surrounded by these energetic and inspired people. It creates such a buzz and it’s very motivating.

Recently we’ve discovered that our space has become a bit of an institution. It’s unusual to meet someone in the fashion or advertising business who hasn’t been to our studio for a shoot, a meeting or an event. This discovery has relit the fire under us to rejuvinate the space and better equip it to be the hub that people consider it to be. The facelift adds functionality and professionalism whilst keeping its whimsical New York warehouse studio feel. Moving forward, we will be holding more events, delivering more education and generally incorporating the community more often and in a deeper way.
