Bare-nosed Wombat
Tasmania, Australia

Wombats shape these landscapes in ways most people never see. Their burrows create shelter for other species, and their constant grazing helps maintain healthy grasslands. Seeing one this close, feeding naturally and completely at ease, is a reminder of how much these ecosystems rely on the quiet work of animals that spend their lives underground and at the edges of the forest.

Protected habitat is what makes moments like this possible — and what keeps wombat populations stable in the face of threats like habitat loss and mange.

Happy International Pallas’s Cat Day!

International Pallas’s Cat Day highlights the work of conservation groups studying their movements, improving population monitoring, and protecting the fragile ecosystems they depend on.

Raising awareness is a meaningful part of that effort — most people have never even heard of this species.

The Southeast Australia gallery is live on my website now. There are three sections, Kangaroo Island, Victoria and the Great Ocean Road, and last but definitely not least . . . Tasmania.

Western Grey Kangaroo
Kangaroo Island, Australia

This kangaroo looked at me like I’d interrupted something important… which, to be fair, I probably did. The pose says “majestic wildlife,” but the expression says “mate, I was busy.”
Kangaroo Island roos have no problem telling you exactly how they feel — usually with a stare like this that lands somewhere between curiosity and mild judgment. Honestly, I respect it.

Western Grey Kangaroo
Kangaroo Island, Australia

Some kangaroos give you the perfect athletic leap. Others give you… this. A full tongue‑out, zero‑stress moment that only happens when an animal feels completely at ease in its environment.

Kangaroo Island’s connected habitat and low disturbance let kangaroos rest, feed, and sprawl out like this without pressure — something many mainland populations don’t get as often. A relaxed roo is a reminder of what healthy ecosystems make possible.

More images of the Australian White Pelican
Kangaroo Island, Australia

A close look at an Australian Pelican resting along the coast. These birds are the largest pelican species in Australia, and their detail up close is incredible — from the texture of their feathers to the sharp awareness in that eye.

Western Grey Kangaroo
Kangaroo Island, Australia

Seeing a kangaroo cross the landscape like this is a reminder of what intact habitat actually supports. Kangaroo Island’s protected areas and low development pressure are a big part of why these populations remain stable here, even as habitat loss and vehicle strikes continue to impact kangaroos across mainland Australia.
