BLUEPRINT - It’s about the process.

Media Day is more than just a few headshots and photo spreads for Daniel, I wanted to shape it like a product that he can take away to repurpose, initiate and inspire and that is exactly what he did. It is amazing what he has done with the product. Thanks Daniel for trusting the process. His testimonial sums up the work better than I could put in words.

"Working with Ed Chiu at Fencing Sport Photography on Media Day was a first for me: a five-hour studio shoot, with me as the subject, plenty of outfit changes, lots of white, and even a smoke machine. The session created a terrific bank of resources to draw on as soon as I needed them: headshots, portraits, fencing action shots, and a 30-minute one-take video with my interviewer, Will Dunn, who was also my opponent for the action shots.

Will later crafted my interview into an online magazine-style article, hosted by Fencing Sport Photography, giving a different style of exposure about the person, not just as an athlete.

I've used the content for articles, a consistent profile in fencing and at work, portraits for international requests, social media posts on LinkedIn and Instagram including reels, presentation resources, and scholarship and fundraising applications. Fencing is largely self-funded, and this content has changed how I share what I do and promote the sport.
Ed Chiu's professionalism, perspective, and patience were impressive, as were Will Dunn's interviewing, writing and behind-the-scenes shots. Thank you both for your dedication and generosity.

Media Day has already proven invaluable in so many ways".

The Fencing Sport Photography website is currently undergoing a huge shift with re-development. In the meantime my immediate focus is on Tokyo International Fencing Comp just under a month's time. Tokyo and I communicate weekly as they are very open with my ideas and how I operate with plans and strategy. Time for me to do something bigger and better.

Slowly rolling out new components for FSP which can also allow viewers to focus more on the content

Introducing Media Days

Media Day is a new initiative at Fencing Sport Photography. Working with Daniel Iliffe has set the benchmark for what this can be.

What Media Day is:

A photography and content sponsorship designed to support elite fencers at critical points in their athletic careers.

Creative Direction:

I curated and directed the entire shoot, conceiving the creative vision, directing Daniel on set and delivering a cohesive body of work across photography and video. The result has set a new standard for athlete content in Australian fencing.

What it delivers:

Full creative direction and curation of the shoot

Retouched competition and portrait photography

Video post-production

A platform for athletes to speak directly to funders, supporters and the broader community

Ongoing social media support and collaboration to extend reach and engagement beyond the fencing community

The sponsorship is valued at $6,500, reflecting the full scope of creative output, though this varies depending on individual requirements.

The longer view:
At Fencing Sport Photography we are committed to support Daniel across his qualification pathway toward the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, not as a single campaign but as an ongoing creative partnership that grows with him.

Why it matters:
Elite fencers in Australia are largely self-funded. Professional content raises their profiles, supports fundraising, attracts sponsors and helps grow the sport beyond its existing community. Media Day exists to change what is possible for Australian fencers.

Stay tuned for Part 2 as I take you behind the scenes to some freestyle fencing photography with Daniel, also the interview by Will Dunn

2026 Fencing Victoria Pride Cup
Fencing Victoria,
28 June 2026

Kat shot his second Pride Cup last month, his second time carrying an entire event - pushing people outside their comfort zone is my thing in photography - because you only get ONE CHANCE.

I was merely there as a booster, directing him when I saw windows of opportunities for great narrative and visual, because I know more about the type of content that can build empowering stories.

For example when I saw Courntey fencing foil, I literally could not form a proper sentence but the keywords were there ‘Kat, shoot Courtney - Foil .. Courtney Foil now.’ so he ran across from piste 6 to 3 (literally how my mind rolls on a daily basis)....I just wanted him to capture her in action and you know it would be energetic when she fenced Jasper. Kat probably lost 5 years of his youth because my strategic and creative headspace are juiced up, I think 1000mph.. Life can be tough when you work for a photographer with 10 personalities all at once..

“Make sure you include everyone, and I do anyone and everyone is important // The high 5s if you can capture those and the ra ra stomps// And hand shakes // People in discussions // And engagement.. // And include the rainbow flags and the socks otherwise you can’t tell it just look like a Cup,.. not Pride Cup.. ‘ It’s a lot of information to process for a 17yo, suddenly a brief becomes an avalanche of information. Pretty much like my life any day of the week, because I interpret every situation into a tv episode.

Those are the creative stuff, but the rest was all him.. Composition and perspectives, aperture, distance, timing. With full awareness. Ok are we talking about fencing here? No it’s just photography but with a real camera, fully manual and no cheating or over shooting like it’s a machine gun “Think before you shoot …” .. the lot that he has learned and I have been harping over the past 15 months.

Until next year!

Katsuki was paid by Fencing Sport Photography for the event.

This August I will be the OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER for Tokyo International Fencing Comp (TIFC). - Commissioned. I will be the first Aussie Fencing Photographer to get paid in Japan.

They have been very opened with my ideas for photography and content building strategies. Atm I am working through flowcharts for various channels at TIFC for various touchpoints. This is very exciting and refreshing to have association who listen to people and I am not even local. (I am British Hong Kong born)

Thanks for the 3.5 years of Australian Fencing, experiences, network and few friends I have made in Australia and New Zealand. My work will only be better and stronger when I shoot outside Australia.

I will pop up to shoot some Fencing Victoria state events, also charity events, university clubs which I think require more support and I am more than happy to donate my time and resources.

Fencing Sport Photography will continue but it will proceed as a different concept business.

TIFC is open to fencers worldwide, from youth to Veteran. AtM there are 535 entries across 19 countries including entries from Australia. visit below link to register.. REGO CLOSE 15TH JULY

Modern Pentathlon Summer Challenge - Wheelchair Fencing Try Out
Jan 2026
Fencing Victoria // Modern Pentathon Victoria

Interview : Prudence's first experience with wheelchair fencing

“The Para Fencing (and Para Pentathlon) didn't end up being involved in the competition. Going forward, we'd love to start doing the same as NZ where the para Pentathlon is included in the same fencing poule with chairs setup for wheelchair fencing, blindfolds for VI (visual impaired) fencing etc so they are part of the regular pool and fence everything but with the same level of impediment applied to both athletes. Then of course if it's big enough, expand it to dedicated para fencing poules.”

– Amos Vagg (Modern Pentathlon)

Late January, I had the opportunity to photograph the Summer Challenge for Modern Pentathlon Vic, the participants range from the regular pentathletes to people who wanted to try out for any of the 5 sports. It was also good for me to shoot a competitive event to start off 2026.

For those of you who don’t know the format of MP, each pentathlete who participates in the sport trains and competes: Swimming / Fencing / Laser Run [Laser Gun and Run] and Obstacles. As a photographer I have also photographed two big comps in 2023 and 2024 which went for 3 days, it really put their endurance (and mine) to the test.

Shortly after the morning at the Obstacles we went to Fencing Victoria for the fencing component of the challenge. We also got to watch the Para Fencing training at Fencing Victoria with Simon the para fencer coached by Gabe.

The participants at MP were invited to fence against Simon, they range from age 8 to the senior fencers. In this video I spoke to Prudence who spoke about her first experience in wheelchair fencing. Prudence is one of my fave ambassadors for Fencing Sport Photography (she has appeared in many of my photos and videos in the last 16 months to promote the sport’s visibility to the wider community).
