The Labour Day long weekend saw Steamrail Victoria, and other organizations host the annual Newport Workshops Open Day of 2026 in the West Block yard, with several types of steam, diesel, electric, and DERM’s 58RM in operation or on static display.
On this day, K160 from the Victorian Goldfields Railway was restored to operational condition, with R711 being repainted into Victorian Railways Blue and Gold, along with the Royal Train from the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre and a special guest from the Bellarine Railway, Locomotive: Klondyke.
Inside 707’s workshop is their preserved Hitachi Suburban Train attracted the attention of enthusiasts and urbex explorers and over in East Block is two of the six remaining Hitachi carriages that have been transported by Chrystall Holdings to Molong NSW and other locations across Australia.
