Last week I photographed a client who doesn’t like having their photo taken.

They told me within the first five minutes. I thanked them for coming anyway, because showing up when part of you would rather not takes real courage. They stayed warm and open the whole session, and I could see that being appreciated for it meant something.

Then I told them my own story. I hid behind sunglasses from my school days. It took me more than twenty years to feel comfortable in front of a camera.

Portrait photography gave me more than technique. It taught me how to be open, how to talk to people. I used to focus on the image in the viewfinder. Now I focus on the person in front of it, helping them relax, helping them show up as the best version of themselves, and capturing that.

If you don’t like having your photo taken, you’re exactly who I love working with. Come as you are.

Everyone thinks shooting is the hard part.

Try picking one frame out of forty when every cow is looking at you slightly differently.

Rushing to my next session, then I caught this through the glass. Couldn’t walk away. Stood outside the window, hit record, let the schedule wait a minute. 🎶.

Behind every polished portrait is a session nobody posts about.

This was a lighting test. No client, no deadline, just me, a 1920s outfit and a couple of hours to see how light behaves on sequins, feathers and skin.

Move a light a little. Shoot again. Check. Adjust. Repeat.

It’s slow and it’s fiddly, but it means that when you’re in front of my camera, I already know exactly where the light needs to be.
