"Lead the Way"

I've been a little absent from social media, it's been a mix of taking a break, doing some other forms of photography and starting some new projects. Keen to be back and start getting through my backlog from my trip to the Grampians a few months ago!

This one's from the Reed's Lookout during sunset. This fallen tree created this interesting composition almost pointing the way out into the valley of some hidden treasure.

It was a fun one trying to capture this image as it required a 3 image vertical Pano and to try and force the perspective of the fallen tree I had to get my tripod in an awkward position wedged right up against the tree.

I'm happy with how it turned out though and it was a beautiful sunset to capture.

"In the Light of Infinity"

I captured this image from under the deep dark skies of the Big Drift near Wilson's prom a few weeks ago.

I had an amazing night this night wandering the dunes and playing with all sorts of compositions.

Whilst I loved the ripples of the sand and the patterns of the dunes of this composition I felt it was missing a focal point, so I tried adding myself as a spectator of the milky way core.

I'm very happy with how this image turned out and with it being my first time using the move shoot move rotator to get longer exposures of the stars I was blown away with the results!

Camera/lens: X-T3/ 16-55mm F2.8 lens.

Tripod: TMA37C carbon fibre legs/ V2E triple Action ball head.

Rotator:

"A Sky Full of Stars"

An astro pic from a recent night under the stars on the dunes of The Big Drift near Wilson's Prom.

This was a super fun night, the wind was super still, the air wasn't too cold and I had an entire night of crystal clear bortle 1 skies to go crazy in.

I've shot this lone tree here before and knew it would work well for an astro portrait of the milky way, I wanted to use a longer focal length and really fill the frame with one of my favourite sections of the milky way core.

I had to take a heap of images to stack to get nice detail for this shot but I think it was well worth the results.

Camera/lens: Fujifilm X GFX Australia X-T3/fuji 16-55mm F2.8 lens.

Tripod: Benro TMA37C carbon fibre legs/ V2E triple Action ball head.

Foreground ⛱️: ISO 1600 30mm/f4/8 min.

Sky ✨: 16 images stacked: ISO 25600 30mm/f2.8/5s

"A Light in the Dark"

This image is from a few weeks ago when I spent the day chasing storms in and around Yea.

After the sun had set I was driving along looking for a vantage point of this developing storm when I spotted this tree.

I got out and looked at the composition and whilst I did about 4 or 5 bolts went off in the exact some position off to the right here.

I quickly pulled out my camera and snapped a few bolts that were lighting up the dark beautifully, the combination of cumulonimbus clouds, stars, lightning bolts and a nice tree really sung to me.

Shot on my Fujifilm X GFX Australia X-T2 and the Fuji 16-55mm f2.8. 1 frame for the stars: 45mm/ISO800/f3.6/4s, 1 for the lightning: 45mm/ISO800/f3.6/4s and 1 for the foreground: 45mm/ISO250/f8/2min

Tripod: Benro Australia TMA37C carbon fibre legs with the V2E triple Action ball head.

Milky Way season is back - so get your Benro out, find some dark clear skies, and get shooting! This awesome pic was captured at Phillip Island VIC by Benro user

The Milky Way core (which is what you see here) is currently rising from the SE horizon at about 11pm-ish and gets earlier every night. The end of daylight savings in a few weekends will bring it close to 9.30pm.

Don't forget to tag us when you post your awesome pics! πŸŒŒβœ¨πŸ‘

"Eruption"

Milky way over a dormant volcano.

Words can't describe how awesome this experience was, standing on the edge of Mount Noorat, one of the best preserved dormant volcanoes in Victoria, with billions of stars filling the bortle 2 sky above.

The wind was blowing fairly consistently all night so I had to come down into the crater a little bit for shelter to get this 50+ image milky way Pano, I was terrified it wasn't going to stitch but thankfully it did! And coming down into the crater gave a beautiful perspective of the deep scoria cone of this volcano.

The special feeling of standing on the rim of a dormant ancient volcano with the (even more ancient) milky way arching above your head was truly special and reminded me how much I love being able to capture these amazing things with a camera.

"Emergence"

Taken at the awesome Forrest Cave Rocks on Phillip Island.

This was a fun shoot, upon arriving here there was a layer of clouds obscuring the skies and after scouting compositions for half an hour I started walking back to the car as the clouds didn’t seem to be letting up in the forecasts. I got about half way back to my car when I looked up and all of a sudden was greeted by the Milky Way in clear view, the clouds were clearing! I quickly turned around and headed to this spot, after checking the forecast again it had been updated and I had about an hour of clear sky to get this shot right.

I got in amongst these rocks and framed up the Milky Way as if it was bursting forth from the Earth, emerging from both the clouds to greet me and the very land I was standing upon.

After I captured my sky frames, right on time, the clouds rolled over again and covered the milky way, I then got my foreground frames and called it a night!

"Down the Barrell"

This one's from a few weeks back at The Big Drift.

Came across this down slope that formed this interesting pattern of sand. As the sun went down it was beautifully lit up by the dying light.

The clouds then rolled over in nice little puffs which I think contrasts the foreground nicely.

Can't wait to get back here for some astro as soon as that milky way core gets a little higher a little earlier!

"Gaia's Stripes"

From the blowing sand of the Big Drift Wilson's Prom.

Pulled from the archives this was an image I've tinkered with for a little while. I captured it one day whilst roaming the dunes and the way sands resembled stripes really stood out to me.

It took a bit of different editing before I was happy with it and in the end I feel the monochrome style really suited this image the best.

Tonight I head out to Wilson's Prom once again but this time all the way down onto the prom and to stay a few nights. I've never been all the way into the prom before and I'm excited to get exploring and hopefully capture some more new images!

"Embrace"

Epic shelf cloud complete with glowing blue hail core rolling over Nulla Vale this past weekend.

I've been giving storm chasing a red hot go for the first time this season and wow this was a fun day. Spent a good while trying to get ahead of this storm after getting suckered to a non starter further south but when I finally got back east in front of this thing it was gorgeous.

I quickly parked up on the side of this road threw out my 2 cameras and started timelapsing this beast rolling over.

I got about 10 minutes of shooting done before the rain and hail "embraced" me and I had to bail, but damn it was so much fun!
