As a young teen I spent every minute I could at my local skating rink, it was a refuge from the troubles I had at the beginning of high school. Having photography and skating, two of the endeavors that have brought me such joy in life, collide with the opportunity to capture Jacinta and Kevyn’s wedding at really did feel like a dream come true. Also not gonna lie, I felt pretty smug that I could take a half decent photo on film while skating backwards in the dark 😎

I had a whole plan on how I would photograph Lily getting ready. We had cleaned up the room, worked out the best light, but when I turned around I saw her looking in the mirror, wearing her dress for the first time on her wedding day. In the background was all the stuff we’d moved, her dress was pink but I was holding my camera loaded with grainy 3200 speed black and white film, and she had her back to the window I was going to use as a light source. I quickly snapped a few frames, and the fleeting moment was over. They’re not the prettiest photos I’ve ever taken, or the most well composed, but the expression on Lily’s face says it all. I can see all the excitement and anticipation, the sudden realization that today is really the day, that’s it’s all about to happen. I chose these photos to be printed in Lily and Xavier’s album, and I was so pleased that they not only kept them in, but that they loved them for the same reasons I did.
