A little outside my comfort zone yesterday for a shoot šŸ

Not a fear of snakes exactly, more a nervous respect for what they are.

Currently house sitting in Adelaide & spending my days with this ridiculously cute face, Tuppence. šŸ¶ā¤ļø Seriously… how damn cute is she?!

I’ve also been busy building my personal website to finally bring all of my work together in one place. The bones of it are done! I was hoping to have the whole thing finished before my birthday, but there’s really no rush.

After years of having everything scattered everywhere, it’s going to be nice to finally have one place for everything I have done & I am currently doing in one home šŸ“·

And in the meantime… Tuppence is doing an excellent job of distracting me. šŸ˜‚

As part of this new ALTAR project, every participant, both those already photographed and those who will be photographed in the future are invited to share something of themselves before we ever create an image together.

I’ve started reading through the responses & while every person is unique, some surprisingly common themes are beginning to emerge.

Many speak about searching for peace, stability, authenticity, or simply a place where they can exist without expectation.

Others describe feeling misunderstood. Emotions mistaken for something they are not. Strength hiding vulnerability. Independence mistaken for distance. Grief, uncertainty, longing and hope often sitting quietly beneath the surface of what the world sees.

What has surprised me most is what people rarely talk about.

Very few mention success, money, careers, status or achievements.

Instead, they talk about belonging.

Identity.

Connection.

Freedom.

Acceptance.

Being seen for who they really are.

Many describe feeling most themselves not in moments of accomplishment, but in simple moments & surrounded by nature, wrapped in a blanket, sharing a coffee, creating something meaningful, spending time with trusted people, or finding solitude away from the noise of everyday life.

Again & again, I find people describing the gap between how they are perceived & how they experience themselves. The labels, assumptions, expectations and roles we all carry. The masks we learn to wear. The parts of ourselves we reveal & the parts we keep hidden.

The photographs are important, but the more I read these responses, the more I realise this project is becoming something larger than a collection of portraits.

It is becoming a collection of human experiences.

Different lives.

Different stories.

Yet remarkably similar desires.

To be understood.

To be accepted.

To find peace.

To feel at home within ourselves.

And perhaps that is what connects all of us more than anything else.

People are always asking me, ā€œHow strong are KONG toys?ā€
They’re incredible. Absolutely incredible. Some of the strongest rubber you’ve ever seen. The best rubber. Nobody makes rubber like this.
I honestly believe if you gave a dog a KONG and a knife, the knife would be in serious trouble. Total disaster. The KONG? Not a scratch. Still standing. Strong. Powerful. Tremendous.
Many people are saying it. Dogs love them. Knives fear them. ā€œ

House sitting has taught me that cats all work to their own timeline. Some take a week to warm up to me, while others, like this one, seem to decide after a day that I’m acceptable company…We’re making progress. 😸

When something you love becomes your career, it changes.

For more than 20 years, photography has been my job. I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and shared in some of the most important moments in people’s lives. It’s been a privilege, and something I’ll always be grateful for.

But outside of work, I rarely picked up a camera unless I was travelling overseas. The passion that first drew me to photography had become harder to find.

Then recently, that changed.

I’ve been quietly working on a personal project that I’ve told almost nobody about, apart from the people directly involved.

What I've realised is that the photography I've always been most passionate about has been centred around people.

The emotions at a wedding.

The expression on a stranger's face in the streets of India.

The stories, cultures, struggles and experiences that make us who we are.

While I can appreciate a beautiful landscape photograph, it has never been what draws me to pick up a camera. Capturing something real in another person does.

For the first time in years, I find myself thinking about photography when I wake up. Looking for photographs when I’m driving. Planning shoots simply because I can’t wait to create them.

With my 50th birthday fast approaching, the timing feels right. After spending so many years creating for others, I’ve finally started creating for myself again.

In many ways, this project is an extension of questions I’ve been exploring for much of my life—through travel, photography, relationships, periods of struggle, and a lifelong search for meaning.

Why do we live the lives we do?

Who are we beneath the labels?

What shapes us?

What masks do we wear?

Are we living authentically?

Why do some people choose one path while others choose another?

I'll be sharing more soon.

Finally got out to see the elephants at Monarto Safari Park again recently & for the first time I saw two of them together in the new habitat.

You can already see how much work has gone into the expansion. The space is massive & feels so much more natural for them. Watching them move around in a place built properly for elephants was pretty special. 🐘

Now I’m honestly just looking forward to the day the full expansion is complete & seeing all five elephants together out there. That’ll be something pretty incredible to witness.
