The Masters Apprentices Photography Club Inc. – May Guest Speaker
This month we’re going explore birds is a different way …
Special Guest: Mitchell Roberts
Presentation title – ‘Bird Photography with Creative Agility’
Mitchell Roberts was always meant to be a wildlife photographer. He set out to understand the world - its rhythms, its fragility, and its untold stories. Growing up in Toowoomba, Australia, he found himself drawn to the quiet places: the rustle of eucalyptus leaves, the shimmer of a bird’s wing in morning light, the hush before a wallaby steps into frame. What began as curiosity soon became vocation.
Armed with a camera and a conservationist’s heart, Mitchell carved a path that blurred the lines between art and advocacy, through connecting with community groups from Esk to Currawinya, from photographers to wildlife lovers to artists.
But Mitchell’s work wasn’t confined to the bushlands of Queensland. In early 2025, he received a Heritage Expeditions’ True Young Explorer scholarship - a rare opportunity to document the sub-Antarctic islands and Antarctica itself. Aboard the expedition vessel, he filmed Southern Royal Albatrosses gliding over Enderby Island, watched petrel flocks wheel above Campbell Island, and stood in awe on the volcanic shores of Macquarie Island. Each frame he captured was a love letter to the wild, and a call to preserve it.
Back home, Mitchell’s teaching style reflected the same ethos. He didn’t just teach people how to use a camera - he taught them how to see. His workshops were immersive, blending technical mastery with creative exploration. Students learned to shoot in manual mode not for control, but for freedom. They learned to track wildlife behaviour, compose ethically, and tell stories that mattered.
Whether mentoring beginners or collaborating with conservation groups, Mitchell’s approach remained consistent: empower, educate, and elevate. His YouTube channel and website (https://www.mitchellroberts.au/) became platforms for sharing not just images, but insight - a place where passion met purpose.
Today, Mitchell Roberts continues to walk the line between artist and advocate. His work reminds us that the natural world is not just beautiful - it’s vulnerable. Through his lens, we’re invited to care a little more deeply, look a little more closely, and act a little more boldly.
Our meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 6 May 2026 at 6.45pm for a 7.00 pm start at St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, 1357 Logan Road, and Mount Gravatt.
If you enjoy photography as a creative practice, you’ll feel very at home with us.
All are welcome.
