Photography styles… explained simply 📸
You might hear photographers talk about portrait, lifestyle and documentary photography, so here’s what that actually means and where I sit.
Portrait photography is the more traditional stuff: everyone looking at the camera, smiling nicely. And honestly… even though they’re not always my personal favourites, these are often the ones clients choose to print, so yes I do aim to get a few of these for you 💓
Documentary photography is totally hands-off, no direction, just capturing whatever naturally unfolds. Real life, as it happens. A quiet observer.
Lifestyle photography (my main jam) sits right in the middle. It’s about connection, movement and real moments, with gentle guidance so you don’t feel awkward or wondering what do I do with my hands. I give prompts, encourage movement and set little moments into motion to spark genuine smiles and laughter.
With me you get a mix:
• a few “everyone looking” portraits 😀
• and plenty of lifestyle and documentary style images of you interacting, laughing, cuddling, doing your own thing.
I’m pretty laid back, I don’t take myself too seriously and my main goal is to create ease and laughter. If you’ve seen me shoot, you’ll know I’m not above busting out some questionable yoga poses or strange movements just to get a laugh 😅
Truth is.... even I feel awkward in front of a camera. So I get it and I do everything I can to make it feel relaxed, natural and fun.
With a visual art degree and a teaching degree, I bring both a strong understanding of art concepts and a genuine love of working with kids — which is honestly the perfect combo for creating those magical, in-between moments. Kids feel safe, seen and free to be themselves… and that’s where the good stuff happens.
So if you’re drawn to photos that feel real, warm, fun and full of connection — that’s lifestyle photography and that’s where I live 📸
