Day 3. Ä’äy Chù West Trail. Yukon Territory.

50km in, dirty, sore, tired and absolutely frothing on what we’re doing. Hiking back out the last 20km, and this time, straight up the guts of the “dried” up glacial valley. We did shave off a good few hours compared to our first day covering the same ground, but we’d given up on trying to stay dry and trudged straight through mud, creeks, bogs and rivers.

An incredible few days for a few hiking kooks. Now on to our next and final adventure, a 715km canoe race down the Yukon River, via the pub.

Day 2. Summiting Ä’äy Chù mountain.

Setting off from camp straight into a dust storm across the valley. Deep, icy cold creek crossings and hours of steep and sketchy climbing opened up to a vast grassland and lead us to one of the most incredible views we’d ever seen. Kaskawulsh Glacier and the surrounding mountains made for a pretty surreal backdrop for a coffee and lunch break.

Just 35km back to civilisation via camp for the night. Saw our first grizzly bear.

Heading deep into the remote corners of the Yukon for a 3 day expedition to Ä’äy Chù mountain and Kaskawulsh Glacier.

As the upcoming 715km canoe down the Yukon River wasn’t enough action for the boys, we decided to throw ourselves into the wilderness and get some extra km’s in.

What started as a cruisy Day 1 on the Ä’äy Chù West Trail turned into 10 hours and 22km of tough hiking. We lost the “trail” several times crossing through deep bogs, leg numbing glacial creeks and muddy river beds all just to get to camp. Not to mention it was our first time in bear country.

Absolutely stoked to have mates crazy enough to join me on these adventures. .mpany_

A quick warm up hike up King’s Throne Peak in Yukon Territory. Love the never ending days there, we set off at 8pm. Of course we had to jump in the icy Kathleen Lake to finish off the “training” session a few hours later.

The next few days take us deep into the remote corners of Kluane National Park.

Trees of The Yukon.

A few moments of bliss during the arduous challenge of canoeing the Yukon River. Taking photos was the perfect excuse to have a couple minutes breather. Cheers lads. 🛶

A few favourite moments from The Yukon River. 🇨🇦🛶

This was easily one of the most challenging environments I’ve faced as a photographer. A couple of weeks back, I documented the .mpany_ crew as they raced 715km in a 6 man canoe through this remote landscape. The best part was, I was in the boat racing with them.

An incredible effort by the boys finishing the race in 54 hours. It was a brutal test of physical and mental endurance. Operating cameras and drones from a 6 man canoe all while sleep deprived and cooked from racing was nothing short of a challenge… and I bloody loved it.

More to follow.
