How to Prepare For Your Next Headshot Photo Session
Headshots reflect your personality, your identity, and your brand.
Investing in an updated headshot photo is a wise decision for anyone looking to enhance their professional image and grow their business and attract more customers. It allows you to present yourself authentically, professionally, and consistently across different mediums, helping you competitively stand out from the crowd.
Whether you're aiming for career growth, rebranding, or starting a new chapter, updating your headshot is a small yet impactful step toward making a lasting impression on your target audience.
Here are my 5 tips to help you prepare:
Choose the Right Clothing:
Your headshot should be an accurate reflection of your brand, so it's important to wear clothing that matches your brand's style and aesthetic. Avoid busy patterns and stripes which can detract from your face. I find that neutral or solid colours work best. Clothing should fit well, not be baggy or very tight, be clean and wrinkle-free. Choose clothing that you love wearing, that makes you feel confident, and will help you look and feel your best on the day.
Hair: It’s so important to create a well groomed and natural looking appearance. For Women think of a clean, basic hair style with some loose curls, or short styling. If you think you can benefit from a colour and cut prior to the photo shoot session, or just a slight trim, go for it. On the day of the shoot, bring any hair and grooming products for last minute touch ups. For Men I suggest a haircut a week before the shoot date creating a well groomed appearance.
Makeup: It's best to choose makeup that enhances your natural features without looking overdone or unnatural. Avoid conturing and highlighting. Use a light foundation to even out your skin tone, wear only a little mascara and eyeliner, and add a bit of colour to your cheeks with a blush or bronzer, and a slightly tinted lip gloss. Eyeshadow is fine to wear if it is subtle and neutral in colour, avoid sparkling or shimmering makeup. On the day of the shoot, bring your makeup for touch ups and don’t forget the loose powder for the face which helps to eliminate any excess shine.
Glasses: If you wear glasses, it's up to you whether or not you want to wear them in your headshot. My suggestion is that if people know you with glasses on then it might be best to wear them during the photo session. Or we can take a few shots with and without your glasses, to see which one you prefer best. If you decide to wear glasses, make sure they're clean.
Jewellery: If you choose to wear jewellery in your headshot photo session, make sure it's appropriate for the type of business you're in. For business headshots, simple, understated pieces are usually the best choice, such as a watch, stud earrings, and a thin necklace.
