Six months later and our city no longer has the stench of sewerage and mould. It no longer has mud drenched people on autopilot, trying not to trip over their own feet and cry all day long. It no longer has mud on every surface and mould growing in every nook and cranny. Many of the houses that were destroyed are still destroyed and muddy and broken. But what I saw in town was an army of tradies on every street, businesses feeding and serving the city, the smell of new plaster and freshly painted walls fills the streets, the debris is far less than in the beginning. Our town is still struggling and still very bare, but pockets of fresh, new and OPEN brings hope to all.
