This was one of my most emotional and rewarding wildlife expeditions to date. While travelling along the Australian East Coast for a campaign, I spent my free time looking for Kingfishers (as part of a year long search). In only four days, I photographed three different species of Kingfishers in different regions, including this stunning Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx azureus).

I captured this shot on the Everglades Eco Safaris in Noosa. I felt utterly defeated on the scenic cruise – there was almost no bird activity at all in the two hours spent cruising the Everglades, and not even a hint of a Kingfisher.

How could this be? I had been blessed with amazing birds this whole trip, but suddenly, there was nothing!? Rude.

Before we broke from the cover of the mangroves on the final stretch back, one of the crew spotted this gorgeous Azure Kingfisher perched on a low branch off the rear of the boat. This marked the third species I photographed overall.

I love the water droplets left on its chest after diving for fish. With more practice, I hope to get photos of it in flight as it hunts.
