Mandarin fish

While Blue Whales were supposed to be the highlight of the Banda Sea, I was particularly taken by the ritual mating dance of the abundant mandarin fish in Banda Neira. It’s rare that someone tells you about something that incredible, and within the hour, at sunset, like clockwork, all the mandarin fish poke out of the rocks and start pairing off. We watched through the tall spines of Diadema as couples levitated up releasing clouds of gametes then shooting off back to the rocks to repeat the dance over and over again. I could have spent all 200bar there and it wouldn’t have been enough. Thank you and !

Hawksbill Turtle

This turtle didn’t plan on modeling when it hunkered down in the reef for a rest, but decided to humor me anyway with a cheeky side-eye.

Did you know that hawksbill turtles are critically endangered globally? If we don’t take deliberate action fast, we could lose these dudes forever. One of their largest killers continues to be plastic pollution. Ideally, in our consumerist culture, if we stop buying so much plastic, companies will abandon producing it for something we want to buy instead. What are ways that you can start using less plastic in your day to day life to help turtles and other vulnerable marine life? Do you have a reusable water bottle you bring everywhere? Do you have reusable bags you bring to the store? Can you prioritize produce that doesn’t come pre-packed in styrofoam and cling wrap? Have you tried using a bamboo toothbrush? Have you tried shampoo bars or liquid/powder refills of any cleaning products? What can you buy in the bulk section that will avoid disposable packaging? All food for thought and ideas you can try out. What am I leaving out?
