of footsteps before mine.
Cracked skin of Country
breathing stories through dust,
waiting for rain songs
to be remembered.
She is not empty —
she is resting,
listening for the old language
to fall back
like water

Our footprints disappear on the tide
the memories never to subside.
From one shore, a child listens
to foam whisper secrets of far-off fires.
From another, elders watch horizons bend
like spears laid gently across the sky.
Though oceans widen between us,
her song travels unbroken.
She carries message sticks of driftwood,
ochre sunsets painted across her back,
star-paths reflected in her dark skin
guiding travellers who trust her breath.
We are salt-blood kin to her—
our tears echo her storms,
our laughter her bright morning ripples.
When we stand and listen deeply,
we hear each other
through her rolling voice.
Across the globe she gathers us,
shore to shore,
hand to unseen hand,
reminding us that water remembers
every story it holds
and returns them softly
to those who care to listen
