If I had to choose only one area to photograph at Lake Cowal then it would be these six snags. So iconic! This photo was taken on 8 April 2018, and it is nothing special. We've all seen much better photos of them, than this one. But I like it because it reminds me how important these six snags were to the local freshwater ecology. I used to sit beside the lake and watch the birds hopping along their branches and image I could hear the buzzing insects living in the dead and decaying wood. Dinner time for the birds!
When the dust storms started in the summer, I remember praying the snags would survive. I wonder if they are still standing. Also, in case you were wondering – a ‘snag’ is the name given to a tree that is dead or dying, but still upright. Once it falls over it’s a log. Unless it falls over in winter. Then it’s firewood.

I'd been living at Lake Cowal for almost three months when I took this photo on the 2 March 2018. The country looked pretty spectacular at the time, particularly as the lake had filled to capacity during the 2016 floods. I remember the water's edge was close to the homestead and I would fall asleep at night, listening to the wind-driven waves ruffling the surface. But I never wanted to walk around outside as I was terrified of coming across a Tiger snake. I'd been told all the stories, and I was more than a little scared! Ultimately it was the beauty of this place, and in particular the water birds, especially the large flocks of pelicans, that drew me outside.
