Friday morning saw the scraping of the sand at the front of lake by council which then led to the push of water opening the lake once again to the ocean. Water levels have dropped quickly with the high tide this morning starting to push water back in.

Conditions up the back of the lake continue to deteriorate with no significant rain on the horizon. Areas that are now ponds will continue to dry out and a significant amount of fish will die. The return of Christmas Bells seems to be the only colour in such a bleak environment.

For those that have enquired about the recent video we posted but is no longer visible, I must apologise as it has been taken down.
A diligent member of the community pointed out I had not received permission to fly in an area that was classed as a current fire zone. I have been currently flying for 4 years now with close to 100 hours in the air for nearly 300 flights, and we always try to ensure any laws governing the flying of drones are adhered to. This was an oversight on my behalf and must apologise for offending said member of the community.
The current plight of Lake Cathie and the importance of making the community aware of how bad things are must have clouded our judgment.
Hopefully once the area is safe to fly again, we can get some more footage, if there is any water left.

A paddle up the lake this morning show’s the true extent of how bad things are. The levels are that low some parts were hard to paddle through. The perch hole is now a big puddle as it is no longer connected to the rest of the lake. As this dries out further the fish deaths will increase 10 fold. All species are suffering, I saw dead bream, whiting, flathead, black fish, mullet, toads, eels and even evidence of yabbies and pipies dying off.
Will opening the lake fix any of this, I fear not. The way the lake is now I don’t believe tidal waters would reach all parts. Let’s hope something can be done to help all the fish species that will certainly die over the coming summer months.

How bad is the lake? These photos show the full extent of how much the water levels have dropped. Many locals have commented “it’s the worst they have ever seen the lake”. Let’s hope the great efforts of Revive Lake Cathie can finally get the council to take action. Added photo from a few years ago when lake was closed and full.
