It has taken a few days to fully sink in, but what an incredible event was Kings Royal VII. Right from the outset on Friday the racing was of a quality heat after heat that would have pleased the most discerning speedway supporter. For that to build in intensity until Sunday night and peak with the enormous spontaneous roar from the crowd as Dennis Shallcross stole the A Dash race with an amazing move securing an impossible victory in the last few metres.... All set the scene for what was to follow.
The A main was run from lap one at a pace more befitting the top 8 shootout laps than a 50 lap marathon... Clint Noakes and Aidan Raymont set a speed that the field chased, but never consistently matched. The carnage caused by this unrelenting pace claimed many of the fancied starters lncluding Greg Worling, Brett Barron and last year's King Matty Smith. The attrition continued taking Victorian duo Atkins and Walters before a mid-race failure of a steering component killed off Noakes' challenge. This left Raymont alone to complete a win most knew could not avoid him for long. Following were brothers Shane and Nathan Macdonald- Shane with speed, discipline and control moving into second place as others fell away and Nathann providing some of the night's highlights with some brilliant overtaking moves taking him all the way from the B Main to 3rd place on the podium. Brodie Boss showed glimpses of his prodigious talent to secure fourth place, simply driving the wheels off a car he seemed at odds with from the first lap on Friday. As the field reduced to single figures, Boss left nothing in reserve, setting his best lap time on lap 40. Johnno Collins shared similar fortunes in coming on stronger the further the race went and spent a memorable last 12 laps trading positions with Dennis Shallcross, eventually securing 5th place.
In the Queens Royal race, Maddi McGee showed last year's efforts were far more than good fortune as she managed to defend her crown after losing and regaining the lead in a thrilling last couple of laps. Jess O'Meara finished narrowly behind in second place and truly had one hand on the Crown before McGee snatched it away with a fastest lap time set on the very last lap. Amy Evans chased the front runners hard the entire evening finishing 3rd in front of Sarah Franz and Kristey Bonsey.
This remarkable event once again has set a new standard... it comes on a massive effort from Kingaroy club members, who pull on this herculean task every year out of pride in their club and love of their sport. May their success continue for many a year.
Race photos to be posted over the weekend.
Cheers.
