It’s well-documented that Switzerland is home to around half of Europe’s glaciers and if you’ve been anywhere near the news in recent months you’ll probably have heard that Europe just endured it’s hottest summer on record. Second year in a row.

NH Summer also proved to be the worst glacial melt season on record.

In fact, since 1931 the Swiss glaciers have retreated (in area) by over 50% (to 2016). Additionally, since 2016 it’s estimated that Switzerland’s glaciers declined by an additional 12% (-2% annually or some 15-20% since my last visit). These glaciers are on a trajectory of extinction, unless we sort our s**t out soon.

So… here’s some photos of them at their smallest (but probably bigger than when you or your kids next see them).

You’d think 2.5 hours on the summit of a 3k mountain would be enough time to take it all in.

…It’s really not.

Schilthorn sits at roughly 3,000m ASL, which ironically is the median elevation of Switzerland’s glaciers. This means glacial shift transformed the entire topographical range in these photos. Moraine fields and cirques pepper the valley floor. Twisted, polished rock faces and horns cling to the walls of 1000m vert cliffs. Having previously hiked the Himalayas and The Tian Shan the uniqueness of the European/Swiss Alps is very evident. The limestone is biggest common denominator which makes for amazing colours at different times of the day.

Hope you get to see them in Summer sometime.

Putting on the skins for the first time in over a year was a special reacquaintance. This dawdle took me through the area known as ‘Kunama Namadgi’ and was a trip of rich solitude. I only spoke with 2 other people for 3 days. It’s like a silent retreat. There was no wind for most of those 3 days and other than the odd crow or wombat, above the tree line you could hear a pin drop.
Often woken by your own thoughts, or breath.
It’s not easy to find a windless stretch in Kunama Namadgi, mid-winter, but this Country is the ultimate land to reconcile, console and consolidate your thoughts.
-11.7°C on the morning of the phosphorescent sunrise. Hard to shoot without gloves or dexterity.

Back in the mountains last week. A mixed bag of conditions; from warm summer sun and light winds to snow on the peaks. 2500m of vertical climbed and 36kms in 24 hours. Good training for the winter ahead.

The Grose Valley Fire kicked off on December 16th, 2019. The fire itself was indirectly spawned by the fire management of the Gospers Mountain Fire - having already been burning since 26th October, some 2 months prior.* The fire went on to disrupt and threaten the Blue Mountain communities of Blackheath, Lithgow, Mount Wilson, Mount Victoria and Katoomba for 7-long weeks, until finally being declared by as ‘contained’ on the 4th February 2020.

Exactly a year on, throughout Sydney’s wettest year in two decades the contrast is stark. Amidst La Niña smoke now is now replaced by thick dense, mist and fog. But still there is very little evidence of proper regeneration to the bush that surround the affected townships.
Here is a vignette of images from this weekend in the high country of the Grose Valley, Blue Mountains NSW.

*widely labelled, the Gospers Mountain fire burned more than 444,000 hectares (about the size of Singapore) making it Australia’s largest bushfire ever.
