KELPIE SELLS FOR $25,750 AT JERILDERIE 🐾
The Jerilderie Working Dog auction saw 55 dogs sold for combined value of $578,000 and average of $10,509 - a new Australian record - on Saturday.
The top-priced dog (pictured) was sold by Brad Pellow with Lot 36, a three-year-old trained Kelpie, Harry, selling for $25,750 to a buyer from Wilcannia.
Other top sales included nine-month-old Kelpie, Lot 46, DroversDream Trixie, trained and sold by Adrian Allbut, selling for $22,000 via Auctions Plus. The price is believed to be an Australian record for a Kelpie under 12 months.
Auction organiser Warwick Doolan said the demand for working dogs continues to grow, partly due to labour shortages.
"It has become more of a requirement, rather than a luxury item, having a good dog...for a lot of farmers a dog is essential," he said.
He said the Jerilderie Working Dog Auction started in 2006 and this year's average price was close to matching the gross sales of their first auction.
