Cape Queen Elizabeth walk on Bruny Island (12km, 4 hours return) ๐๐ฆ๐ฟ
The Cape Queen Elizabeth walk is one of Tasmania's most beautiful; with sea caves, a stunning Cape, an archway on the beach and magnificent views of Adventure Bay and The Neck. The walk also passes Big Lagoon, a waterbird haven in the Bruny Island Neck Game Reserve, and leads directly to 'The Neck' Beach. You are also likely to come across gorgeous echidnas, local wildlife and the odd seal on the beach or dolphin just off shore ๐๐พ๐๐ฌ
The start of the trail leads directly to the coast via an unused 4WD track just before the Bruny Island airstrip. There is a small carpark next to a gate where you commence the walk. There is also a log book, about 10 metres along the track, for you sign in your walk and estimated time of return.
The initial part of the walk is flat and well maintained. The landscape changes dramatically as you pass through the trees, past the "Big Lagoon" (yep, that's really it's name) and then onto a beach track.
When you walk onto the beach there are amazing views south over 'The Neck' and down the island to Adventure Bay and the settlement of that name (originally called Cooktown). This beach is seriously washed clean of human footprints! At low tide you can then walk north around the front of Mars Bluff and into another wonderland of 100 foot high cliffs and an amazing open arch (see pics). You can then continue all the way along Miles Beach, with is about 1 km in length, before coming to a track that leads up over the cliffs to the top of Cape Queen Elizabeth.
When you return past Miles Beach and back to Mars Bluff you can either walk around the front of the cliffs again, or if the tide comes in, just came back over the top of Mars Bluff and back onto the track home.
During the walk I caught up with a few locals... an echidna, yellow-tailed black-cockatoo, an elephant seal, swans and sea birds. This walk is more than just a walk... it's an unforgettable journey.
