Glowing Guardians: Protecting Fluorescent Marsupials

This photograph shows a dead Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii gunnii), a vulnerable marsupial species with a remarkable but lesser-known trait: UV-induced visible fluorescence. Under UV light, these marsupials absorb ultraviolet radiation and re-emit it as visible light. This unique phenomenon underscores the urgent need for road safety measures to prevent roadkill and protect these glowing creatures. Many marsupials exhibit this hidden fluorescence, emphasising their ecological significance and the critical need to safeguard their habitats from human threats.

If this photograph becomes a finalist, it will be exhibited at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, during Beaker Street Festival 2024.

The Beaker Street Science Photography Prize would not be possible without the generous support of the Pennicott Foundation, this competition’s Sponsor, helping to protect our precious environment for future generations. Learn more at www.pennicottfoundation.org.au

The Beaker Street Science Photography Prize is also supported by Full Gamut, Tasmania's premier fine art printers, who will be preparing the finalist photographs for exhibition (www.fullgamut.com.au) and Prize Supporter Frogmore Creek Winery and Cellar Door (www.frogmorecreek.com.au).

Caught Polychaete worm,-> christmas tree worm ( Spirobranchus giganteus) while feeding. Amazing purple and white color of its crowns which are composed of radioles, or hair-like appendages radiating from the worm's central spine. These appendages are used for respiration and to catch dinner, which typically consists of plankton.

Killer beauty-> The introduction of the Northern Pacific sea-star (Asterias amurensis) to Tasmanian marine ecosystems has had a profoundly negative impact on the delicate balance of the region's endemic species. This invasive sea-star, often referred to as the "killer starfish," poses a significant threat to the local biodiversity. Its voracious appetite for shellfish, particularly the native Tasmanian blue mussel, has led to a sharp decline in these important species. Furthermore, the sea-star's rapid reproductive rate and resilience have allowed it to establish thriving populations along the Tasmanian coast, further exacerbating the issue. This threat to the Tasmanian marine environment underscores the urgent need for effective management and mitigation strategies to control the Northern Pacific sea-star's spread and protect the unique and vulnerable species that call these waters home. Preserving the ecological integrity of Tasmania's marine ecosystems is not only crucial for the region's biodiversity but also for the livelihoods of those who depend on its resources.

Landscapre Awards 2023-> Highly Commend certificate/Award. Presented by Eizo and Australian Photography Magazine. I took this image at Gordon (Southern tTasmania) and it was freezing. Suddenly, there she was. Dancing in the most glorious and beautifull way down in the horizon. It was a breath taking moment.
Landscpae It is one of the hardest genres in photography to do well. As Ansel Adams once wrote: "Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer- and often the supreme disappointment". As quoted on their website-> most of it is beyond our control-the sun, the clouds, the placement of objects in the scene. That's not to say photographers don't have choices to make. It just means getting the photo you want might mean returning to the same location 100 times to find the perfect conditions to freeze that moment which you have been hunting for..
Thank you for the opportunity to compete and present my humble work in between some of the most famous and talenteed photographers out there. 👌🇦🇺
