Sunrise over the southern ocean.🌞🌊

It is hard to find the right words to properly describe this one. We left the jetty early, the Milky Way visible in a perfectly clear night sky. Just around the corner the first bit of orange appeared along the horizon as we left the bay. Shearwaters, Gannets and Albatross were already flying around us while the orange band grew wider. Soon the sun made her appearance and the water and sky exploded with life! 🌞

A few blue tones from a trip down south. Exploring the remote and rugged southwest coast of Lutruwita / Tasmania and sailing around some pretty epic rocks with tons of birds around of course!

Thanks to my friend Els for putting together this amazing adventure and for letting me borrow his Sony 100-400 lens!

Double-banded Plovers, migratory shorebirds, Kiwis (not the fruit or the weird ground bird), Kiwi in reference to the plovers breeding grounds in New Zealand. Each winter they can be found along the Tasmanian coastline before they head back across the Tasman Sea to make a new generation of Double-banded goodness.

For the past year and a half these beautiful black birds (not Blackbirds) have been our next door neighbours, daily evening walk companions and beach friends. Now it was time to say goodbye and move back into a new neighbourhood with new birds. Bye for now Sooty Oystercatchers, see you at the next beach walk. 😌

A few frames from the past months around Tassie. Capturing nature’s beauty in a way that does it justice is tough—I get picky, and only a handful of shots truly *feel* right. Sometimes you know instantly, other times you have to look at images again to see *it*—the art or soul of your picture.

But one thing is always clear: nature’s beauty is *insane* and deserves to be seen, cherished, and protected. The threats to our environment and wildlife are real, and we need to step up and fight for them.

In the coming months, I want my photography to *give back*—because wildlife photography shouldn’t just be about extracting. Nature gives us so much and as wildlife photographers we have a responsibility to return the favor.

The Lewin's Rail, a very secretive and cryptic bird species.🕵️‍♀️ In southern Tasmania a few sites offer good and reliable opportunities to observe these fierce little birds. You can watch them patrole the exposed mud looking for invertebrates. Although invertebrates make up most of their diet, Lewin's Rails don't hold back when coming across frogs or even other bird eggs.
The reality of looking for rails usually looks more like the third picture in this series but with a litle luck and patience you can get a short glimpse at the full bird. 🌾

Thrilled (a little late, but still thrilled) to anouce that two of my photos were finalist in the 2023 BirdLife Australia Photography Awards in the categories "Human Impact" and "Backyard Birds". Both photos were taken from the porch of the two different apartments we lived in here in Hobart. Since we are about to move to a new place sometime soon I was thinking back to these moments and how much I love photographing birds in the urban environment. 🏢
Click on the link in my story to view all the other amazing finalists and winners and learn more about the meaning behind my photos.

Some shots from a fantastic day (earlier this year) at Tasmanian Land Conservancy Tinderbox Hill Reserve. 🦅🌳
We were blessed with 29 different bird species and 2 echidnas all within 2 hours. Highlight were the Blue-winged Parrots and a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles flying very low in between the trees before they started soaring above the canopy. The Dusky Woodswallows weren't happy with the eagles visit and promptly started chasing and harrassing them out of the area. Not sure if I would call that brave or stupid ... 😆
