Nom, nom, nom. Mumma keeps an eye on her older joey (the last photo is of a little joey ear, I mean how can you not love that 😚) while she fills her tummy with some deliciousness. We can see her grabbing the branch with her powerful forelimb while she hangs on to the fork of the tree with her back limbs. Yes this is a wild pair local to Crows Nest area and we are happy to see how healthy she is 🍃

An Eastern Spinebill - very much like a hummingbird in its behaviour in that it can hover, not for long, but it certainly can do it. Being a small honeyeater they flit continuously and are an absolute joy to watch!

A beautiful female or young male Paradise riflebird (𝘗𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘴) seen at Ravensbourne NP just recently. There are 4 species of Riflebird, of which Australia has 3. The male is simply divine and has an elaborate and spectacular courtship routine.

They are dependent on rainforest, another species in decline due to forest clearing.

I’m stoked to see one in a place where they’re hard to find and that means not many people will bother them. Plus we fought off the leeches literally crawling up our legs, like nothing I have ever seen 🪱😦…😂

Blackbutt nocturnal arboreal wildlife survey with a small group.

Great Glider (Petauroides volans)
Red-necked Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus)
Sugar or squirrel glider (waiting for confirmation)
Fraser’s banded snail (Sphaerospira fraseri)
Common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus)
Another Greater Glider with a very lovely dark mask (poor quality image due to distance)
Tail of a sugar glider - not super fluffy
Possibly a Ringtail possum drey (nest in tree)

I wont lie, night wildlife photography is difficult, for the animals firstly, and then the photographer. It’s not something you do, unless you can out weigh the impact on the animals having such bright light in their faces. This project is important and I need the practice.

An almost white Eastern Grey Kangaroo. She lives near us, and is the second generation I’ve seen of this colour variation, both females. Her joey was grey so maybe that’s the last of them.
I worry about her, she does stand out from the crowd. BTW we are semi-urban, just hanging on to the last fragments of ‘rural’.

A little Sugar Glider. It’s difficult to show how small they are, its body is roughly the size of an adult hand. Mid feed, that sap is so tasty that the dribble is real…🤤
INaturalist reports this is the proper Petaurus breviceps (but without seeing the end of the tail it’s hard to be sure). What this means is that Crows Nest contains a species that is typically coastal (east of the Great Divide), and has a restricted distribution.

I love this land, can you tell? Everywhere we go the colours of our country scream their dominance. Orange, yellow and blue with hints of red. It lights up my soul.

The endangered Greater Glider (Petauroides volans). She lives elusively in the very top of the tallest eucalypts. About the size of a small cat, this one is dark chocolate brown with silver flecked back, ventrally white. Long tail much like a lemur. The sweetest face and extra difficult to find and photograph as they are nocturnal.

We think we can keep deforesting.
They won’t survive.
Planting new trees doesn’t work on its own.
It’s like saying here human is a dolls house, that’s your new home.
There’s only one answer here.
