Adventures with Tudy

Adventures with Tudy Dementia has stolen a lot, but we won't let it steal the moments of joy we have each day.

Join us as we go on adventures with Tudy and live in the moment and take our fun and joy everywhere we can.

The recent bad weather has been a bit of a trial for Tudy. Thunder and lightning are now very scary and no matter the assurances given, Tudy becomes agitated and worried.

This afternoon as a storm moved over, Brooke sat on the couch with her, holding her hand, snuggling under a blanket. Andre Rieu was turned up loud to try and mask some of the sound and they were quickly joined by Banjo the cat.

Life got in the way, so we haven't gotten around to posting in a while. Tudy is well, she constantly keeps Brooke and I on our toes. Here's a quick one we filmed this morning when we went to the shops after breakfast.

Tudy loves her ice-cream, especially as an after breakfast treat. If we didn't carefully monitor her, she would eat ice-cream for every meal. But the occasional breakfast dessert seems reasonable, right? Tudy thinks so.

We've recently joined some Dementia support groups on Facebook and they've been great for hints and tips and to not feel so isolated in what we're living with. Loving ice-cream seems to be a big commonality amongst a lot of people living with dementia.

Introducing the Family and Friends wall!

To help Tudy remember all of the faces and names of family and friends, we have popped up photos in our kitchen.

So many names, so much socialising! ❤️

As the dementia has progressed, Tudy's perception of time has slowly deteriorated. We have a clock in the kitchen that clearly shows time, date, day of the week, and time of the day (morning, afternoon, evening), which helped in the beginning, but now she is forgetting to even look at that.

Talking about things that are in the future, such as medical appointments, birthdays, or Christmas can be rife for frustration. As an example, last Christmas, we were going to Brooke's family to have dinner after I finished work on Christmas Day. For a few weeks prior, she was confused about when we were going, thinking it was that day, or the next day. She'd come out with shirts asking to get our opinion on which one she should wear. Then she would be upset and frustrated that it was still days away.

We now either have to not talk about something, then right before we're going somewhere tell her to get ready as we are doing such and such. Or we have to do a countdown, so she can visually see a reminder of when something is happening.

As soon as we started to put up Christmas decorations, she started asked about how long away it is, and what plans we have. So I made a days until Christmas countdown, and Brooke and I sing a little ditty about it and dance around and make it fun for her.

After she goes to bed each night, we stick the next day's number on, so that when she gets up each morning, she can immediately see it is still days away. The frustration level is so much less already.

Tudy has a new dance partner! 💃💃

Yesterday we attended a family member's birthday party, and didn't Tudy dance the night away.

It's been a minute or two since we last posted anything!

Tudy doesn't do her own hair anymore, so we have a 'Brooke's House of Hair' day once a week. We find things a lot easier with Tudy if we keep routines, whether it be daily such as showering every morning or her weekly 'House of Hair' appointment.

More than anything, we want Tudy to feel positive about getting her hair done. We set her up in front of the TV to watch a nice show (most of the time it's an Andre concert, lets be real) and have a good chat about what's on the telly while she gets pampered.

Tudy loves getting her hair brushed - really loves it. To the point where most of the time, she slowly close her eyes, and will doze off. Tudy is so trusting of me when I'm doing her hair, and not only that - most of the time we have a parade to showcase the fresh 'do'

I'm not sure how long she will continue to enjoy these moments each week, but we enjoying spending them with her.

Last week we showed something slightly different to what we usually do. It was a more serious side of Dementia that can present itself at any time. Worry, anxiety and stress. Repeated questions, and the incapacity to accept the reassurance things were going to be okay.

So we administered the best remedy for Tudy - a surprise adventure, with a highly competitive game of Spotto.

We love Tudy so much - we have received a lot of words of encouragement and support, and for that, we are really thankful. Our main goal of creating videos of Tudy was to preserve awesome memories before they slip away from us. She's such a star. ❤

Time for something a little different.

We love sharing the adventures Tudy goes on, however, its equally important to share some moments that lead to a suprise adventure.

On the weekend, Jodie & I had a conversation (not even a conversation, more like a few comments about a news article we read online) that Tudy overheard. Sadly, she entered what we call a scratched record mode.

Basically - one thing (usually not a good thing) is suddenly on her mind, No matter how you answer, or try to distract her, she keeps coming back around to the same thing.

Just like a record jumping on a scratch.

How did we help Tudy overcome her broken record not the weekend? With lots of love.

Mask wearing & Tudy aren't really friends.

In fact, most adventures Tudy goes on, she stays in the car the entire trip by her choice. She simply enjoys going for the ride and people watching.

This video is just a couple of things we do when Tudy wants to go shopping, without leaving the comfort of her own car.

Tudy loves a good adventure, even if it’s a tour of the garden, and the potted plants we have by the shed.

One of the bittersweet, but wonderful moments we often have with Tudy are the ones where she notices things ‘for the first time’. Whether it be how a flower has grown, or the change in weather. These moments have their own kind of beauty, that sadly will fade as time goes on.

Until these moments fade away, we will make the most of our adventures to put a smile on Tudy’s face every day. ❤️
