Landscape transformation through the power of one of Australia’s traditional ecological management practises.

An amazing thing to witness and be able to share. Thank you to those who kept and keep this knowledge and practise alive. Thank you to the land stewards Queensland Trust For Nature for supporting and encouraging nature positive action.

Have you ever seen a Grevillea carpet the forest floor? What about a single flowered one?

Grevillea singuliflora | Single Flowered Grevillea.

couldn’t decide which lighting I liked the most of this open sclerophyll country covered with a ground layer of this Grevillea, so you get both! 🥳😩

Does your country do burn preparation for fire season and back burning?

Here in Australia, it’s pretty common practise where possible and required. It’s hard work, time consuming, but extremely rewarding to be ensuring we do lose major habitat trees to a fire.

Historically this wasn’t necessary, but with large habitat trees less and less common, it’s important we ensure the survival of them. Especially specimens that might have a weakness to a fire (like a scar).

Potentially controversial opinion, but when the scientific name is good, there isn’t a common name.

Dodonaea falcata

Funny enough falcate describes sickle shape, which these leaves are, but not in an exaggerated manner. But the name just fits and is easy to remember! At least, to me it is 😅

Enjoy your week beautiful people. Keep doing your good for self, others and nature.

You’ve heard of kangaroos and budgee smugglers, but have you heard of budgeroos?

An absolutely epic tree that fits amongst the gumtrees and changes in bark dramatically over its long life. From flaky strips, to grey ironbark to deep fissured red and brown. A monogenus and a stand out in the region.

You ever just assume it’s ‘that’ locally common species, but eventually realise you know less than you thought? Here’s another example for me☝🏻 I jumped at Zieria smithii (now i’m like how bro? but yeah hindsight is a gem)

Zieria laxiflora | Wallum Zieria

Zieria’s are a pretty awesome genus. With the trifoliate leaflets and often nice smelling leaves when crushed, I enjoy seeing them as a sign of a healthy midstorey. What do you think? A based indicator?

Is it just me or is keying out the Hibbertia genus easy on the surface and hard in the trenches? 🧐

From an initial look at the genera’s key ID features you’d think counting the sepals and carpels is an easy way to figure out species. Then the key turns to the leaves and the cross over is so challenging that I spend an hour looking at different leaves. 🍂

As a Heath fanatic, Hibbertia’s have always been one of the biggest challenges, anyone got any tips?

Hibbertia crinita | No common name
