March 2019
Winter was the best time to go to London and Paris. Flights were cheaper, we barely had to line up for attractions, and the weather stayed sunny throughout the trip.
Before the trip, we were aware that there may be complications on arrival. Gatwick had the drone incident, and Paris was rioting. Fortunately we avoided all the mess, and the trip went smoothly.
We hired a car so that we had more flexibility when it came to travelling. London traffic was notoriously bad, and travelling from Notting Hill to the Royal Observatory took over 30 minutes!
We drove to Stonehenge to witness the awe-inspiring stones built over 2000 years ago. They were aligned to mark the summer and winter solstices. Fascinating!
In London, we bought the London Pass, which allowed us easy access to most of the attractions at a discount. It covered St Paul's Cathedral, Shakespeare's Globe and Westminster Abbey (and more).
Paris was very different to London. French people were more relaxed and laid back, whereas Londoners always had somewhere they needed to go. The local bakeries made the most amazing baguettes and croissants.
However, the worst experience on the trip happened on the train. I was holding 2 large luggages and it was crowded, everyone was squashed in like sardines. Suddenly, on my right and left I feel hands trying to reach into my jeans pockets. Luckily I was able to prevent them from stealing anything. Stay safe in Paris!
I was very sad to hear about the fire at the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris. It was such an intricate and mesmerising cathedral, and we're glad we were able to experience it before it was damaged.
Overall, London was the more enjoyable of the two cities as we spoke the language and I felt more safe. I would suggest to anyone travelling in Europe to leave your phones and wallets in your bags, or buy a chain like our Airbnb host.
