Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) - One of the strangest mammals you will ever see. With a tail like a beaver, an Otters body, and a bill like a duck, the Platypus is a very interesting and ancient amphibious mammal that inhabits the waterways of eastern Australia. A deeper look at this mammal reveals details that are even weirder than it’s looks. It is one of two families, namely Echidnas and Platypus, that belong to the order Monotremata or Monotremes which are charateristic for laying eggs for reproduction. The name Monotreme refers to the fact that they use a single hole for both reproduction and excretion. Milk is excreted onto specialised mammary hairs for young to suckle as the Platypus lacks mammae. The bill is the primary sense organ equipped with pressure and electro receptors for locating prey, staying dry in a waterproof coat, while storing crustaceans in specialised cheek pouches for consumption later. Simply awesome!
