Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) - One of the strangest mammals you will ever see. With a tail like a beaver, an Otters body, and a bill like a duck, the Platypus is a very interesting and ancient amphibious mammal that inhabits the waterways of eastern Australia. A deeper look at this mammal reveals details that are even weirder than it’s looks. It is one of two families, namely Echidnas and Platypus, that belong to the order Monotremata or Monotremes which are charateristic for laying eggs for reproduction. The name Monotreme refers to the fact that they use a single hole for both reproduction and excretion. Milk is excreted onto specialised mammary hairs for young to suckle as the Platypus lacks mammae. The bill is the primary sense organ equipped with pressure and electro receptors for locating prey, staying dry in a waterproof coat, while storing crustaceans in specialised cheek pouches for consumption later. Simply awesome!

Leopard (Panthera pardus) - an elegant and powerfully built member of the family Felidae, these beautifully patterned cats can be extremely challenging to locate, despite being fairly widespread. Solitary by nature, Leopards are only found together when mating or when a female has cubs. Generally nocturnal, Leopard are generalist hunters, utilising a wide range of food sources from insects through to medium antelope up to the size of Impala although adult Common Eland have been recorded being hunted. Often kills provide more meat than their immediate requirements, requiring the carcass to be stored for later, often by dragging a carcass into a dense thicket or up into a tree and out of reach of potential scavengers.

Cape Cobra (Naja nivea) - A potentially dangerous species, that can vary in colour from black to bright golden yellow, it is regarded as our most dangerous Cobra species as the result of fatalities caused by bites in South Africa. Inhabiting Karoo scrub, Fynbos, and arid savanna, this diurnal species hunts for rodents, amphibians, reptiles including other snakes, and birds. They are well known for raiding bird nests, particularly those of Sociable Weavers, where they seek out nestling and fledgling birds. Standing it’s ground if threatened, it raises a hood rapidly, and bites readily in defence. Possessing a the most potent neurotoxic venom of any African Cobra, a bite inhibits the passage of information between neurons and receptors in the Central Nervous System, capable of causing progressive weakness and severe breathing difficulties and death. Bite victims require immediate medical attention and in severe cases anti-venom.

Tarangire National Park - One of my favorite destinations that I have visited with in Africa. A mixture of thornveld, grassland and interspersed Baobabs, Tarangire offers a wonderful introduction to Tanzania. Home to some 500 bird species and a wonderful diversity of mammals, Tarangire is definitely worth a visit.

Gelada - Theropithecus gelada - Having just returned from my second trip to Ethiopia, I was over the moon to find and photograph the wonderful and endemic Gelada, the world's most terrestrial primates, atop a cliff in the highlands. Predominantly grazers, these impressive primates are sadly on the decline due to habitat loss and direct confrontation with local farmers who see them as pests.

Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) - An oft maligned mammal in Africa should really gain the respect of all who are privileged to witness this species. Hyena are generally regarded as scavengers although their hunting prowess is now very well documented and some packs in the Serengeti only hunt and don't scavenge. They are however responsible for cleaning up the savanna and limiting the spread of most diseases. This young Hyena was enjoying the last light of the day with it's mother sleeping nearby. Over my time watching this species have learnt to truly respect and enjoy them.

The Great Migration - One of the spectacles of the natural world. Starting in the southern Serengeti, in the calving grounds, over a million Common Wildesbeest with tens of thousands of Plain Zebra, Thomson's and Grant's Gazelles straggling behind follow the rainfall across the western edges of the Serengeti, North toward the Mara River and into the Masai Mara before returning along the eastern edges of the Serengeti back to the calving grounds. Following this horde are the predators which work systematically to seperate the young and weak as the large buffet passes through their range. This is an amazing experience, with animals as far as the eye can see and an incredible noise as they pass by. Truly one ticked off of my bucket list.

Sloggett's Vlei Rat - Often found sun basking on cold winter days. Found at high altitude from 2000m above sea level in mountainous terrain, this mammal lives in rock crevices associated with quality sedge meadows. Active by day, they feed on shoots and stems of reed, sedges, grasses and other plants. Research on predation of these small mammals tends to suggest that their populations is regulated rather by limited access to resources during cold winters and long periods of snowfall.

Morning Beauty - The dominant Leopardess of the area had made a kill during the evening and had fetched her cub and bought it to the meal. We arrived as they started to relax and feed. The sudden whooping call of a nearby Hyena alerted the female, who subsequently walked off for about 15 minutes, checking the immediate area was secure, finally returning to feed.

Meerkat lookout - A mammal that has captured the imagination of many guests and wildlife lovers, with it's social and Inquisitive behaviour. This Meerkat was seen around Spitskoppe in Namibia. Normally in family groups of between 5 and 40 individuals, they spend their daylight hours foraging for food in their chosen arid, lightly vegetated habitat. This individual was alerted to a nearby bird taking flight.

Magic of Etosha - Etosha is a place of extremes, from the dry featureless salt flats to the bustling waterholes where the animals congregate around the scarce resource. Here I managed to capture the open grassy expanses with the ever present Springbok in the foreground and the Gemsbok (Oryx) on the horizon. An amazing environment in which to be immersed.
