What a trip! I travelled two days to get to remote Himalayan village of Sakteng, where The Great Yeti Festival was taking place. The procession and opening ceremony performances were a riot of colour, a delight to see and photograph! The story of the yeti is very much a part of Sakteng culture; there are people here who remember sightings of this "abominable snowman" and claims of being chased or attacked by yeti! Part of the performances also included a trio of yeti being rambunctious with each other! The village of Sakteng sits in a high altitude valley (about 2900m above sea level) surrounded by peaks and forests. It's not hard to imagine that the yeti still roam the mist-shrouded highlands...

Two views of Taktsang Monastery in Bhutan. We started the climb to Taktsang in the morning -- a bracing 3 hour hike (with several rest stops) to get there on a day of dramatic skies. Taktsang is more popularly known as the Tiger's Nest Monastery, because the story goes that Guru Rinpoche who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, rode on the back of a tigress which flew to the cliffside so that he could defeat malicious spirits in a cave. The monastery was built on the site of Guru Rinpoche's victory.

We had the opportunity to visit Chendebji monastery in Bhutan, where butter lamps were being lit. Lighting butter lamps is a symbolic representation of dispelling the darkness of ignorance with the light of wisdom and compassion. The first image shows a young monk lighting butter lamps. The second is a portrait of the caretaker of the monastery -- a man whose face spoke a thousand words of a life lived to the full, so much so that I had to ask him for a portrait!

Village life in Bhutan
We spend a night in the remote highland village Ogyencheling in Bhutan, which gave plenty of opportunities to spend time in with residents, who were so welcoming and gracious with our band of photographers. This is the photography that thrills me -- documenting and capturing the living, breathing daily lives of people when you get the opportunity to get close.

Village life in Bhutan.
Many of my tours include time in villages -- we usually overnight in one or near one. This lets us have time in the village, a slow photography walk with plenty of pauses as we connect with people we meet, and develop an understanding of the rhythm of life. There's a curiosity that runs both ways and it makes for a richer travel and photography experience. Our images are more authentic, less posed, more off-the-cuff, and the result of connection and conversation.

The Bhutan Photography tour for 2026 finishes in a couple of days, and while the feeling is sad and nostalgic, I'm already planning the next one for 2028. This tour will be a ripper as we will be including some deep dives into more remote Bhutanese communities.

I've just put together a photography tour to Cambodia (8 days). It's been a few years since I've run a tour in Cambodia and I thought it was time to re-visit this amazing country. In particular, the region around Angkor where we'll spend days moving between the ancient ruins and villagers, capturing the tapestry of culture, tradition, history and village life.

Highlights include:
- the incredibly well-preserved ruins of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, the Bayon, Batey Srey and more!
- Village visits for immersive and cultural photography.
- Spending time with local Khmer families to capture portraits and moments of everyday life.
- Authentic Khmer cuisine (yummy!).
- Sunset at a floating village in Lake Tonle Sap.
- Curated portrait sessions with young monks and a Khmer dancer.
- Rural excursions to capture life along rice-fields and farms.
- Photo editing and critique sessions to help refine your photographic vision.

I'll be releasing details soon, but if you're keen to join us on 23-30 November 2026, drop me a line!
