Not the best photo but what a dream come true to see one of the most bad ass jumping spiders in the world.

This is a male Maratus lobatus, a peacock jumping spider about 3-4 mm in size. These spiders are famous for their amazing courtship dance displays. If you haven’t seen it I urge you to google “peacock jumping spider dance” straight away.

Thank you for the tip on where to search for them.

Whats more christmassy than a shiny cuckoo wasp? Just as pretty as any Christmas tree ornament and more clepto than the grinch.

Next years project will be to find and photograph more of these spectacular wasps.

The cuckoo wasp in the photo is a female Chrysis iris a small cuckoo wasp that I came across this summer. Chrysis iris are cleptoparasites of solitary wasps in the genus Symmorphus. Luckily for me we had a lot of S. murarius (Större vedgeting) at the man made wasp hotel. Swipe for pic of the S. murarius, the largest solitary wasp in Sweden Bonus.. its carrying a larvae of the broad-shouldered leaf beetle Chrysomela populi.

Have a great Christmas guys!

Brown on brown, well not entirely. Some Atelopus populations like this Atelopus spumarius have striking red soles on the hands and feet, visible only when walking. Recent research shows that this coloration function as a warning signal directed towards birds, telling them to stay away. Atelopus toads actually have a quite potent tetrodotoxin in its secretions which can give the attacker a nasty surprise.

The largest of all waterlilies, Victoria amazonica, is a hostage-taking master of seduction.

The giant waterlilly opens its flowers at sunset. The white flowers are pollinated by nocturnal beetles in the scarab family, attracted by the fragrant flowers that smell a bit like pineapple. The flowers are also thermogenic, meaning they produce heat, and entice the beetles with their warmth.

The next morning the flower closes around the beetles. During this time, the pollinated flower changes colour from white to pink and pollen is released from the stamen. When the flower re-opens in the evening, the pollen covered beetles fly away - just to be tricked once again by another sweet-smelling flower.

Three-toed sloths are masters at They barely move much at all and only come down to the forest floor once a week to take a dump. Sloths like to hang around and eat the leafs and buds of cecropia trees. A cool thing with the cecropia genus is that most species are guarded by azteca ants. However I don’t what effect they have on sloths.
