Captured at the picturesque Normanton Town Dam in Queensland's Gulf Country, this remarkable little waterfowl is one of Australia's smallest and most distinctive native ducks. Despite its name, the Green Pygmy Goose isn't a true goose at all. It is a specialised tree duck that thrives in wetlands filled with water lilies and floating vegetation, making locations like Normanton's Town Dam an ideal habitat.

The Town Dam has become a valuable refuge for local birdlife and migratory species, attracting birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and wildlife photographers from across Queensland. Surrounded by seasonal wetlands and rich biodiversity, it offers incredible opportunities to observe and photograph some of Australia's most unique bird species in their natural environment.

Wildlife encounters like this are a reminder of the extraordinary natural treasures found throughout North Queensland and beyond. Every image tells a story of patience, timing, fieldcraft, and a deep appreciation for Australia's diverse ecosystems.

Three Australian Pelicans, One Perfect Sunrise | Muttonhole Wetlands, Normanton

Captured just after sunrise at the Muttonhole Wetlands in Normanton, these three Australian Pelicans stood motionless in the golden morning light, their reflections creating a moment of remarkable symmetry and calm.

The Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) is one of Australia's most recognisable waterbirds and boasts the longest bill of any living bird species in the world, measuring up to 50cm in length. These highly adaptable birds are expert fishers and can travel vast distances across the country in search of suitable wetlands and feeding grounds.

Located on the outskirts of Normanton in Queensland's Gulf Country, the Muttonhole Wetlands are an important refuge for a diverse range of birdlife and migratory species. The wetlands provide photographers, birdwatchers and nature lovers with exceptional opportunities to experience Australia's unique wildlife in its natural environment.

For me, wildlife photography is about more than documenting a species. It's about preserving a fleeting moment that highlights the beauty and importance of Australia's natural landscapes.

Aerial photography has transformed the way businesses showcase their locations, assets and project progress. While aerial imagery was once only possible through expensive helicopter flights, modern drone technology now provides a safe, cost-effective and highly detailed perspective that was simply unattainable for most businesses just a decade ago.

Whether you're in construction, real estate, retail, tourism, infrastructure, agriculture or commercial development, drone photography offers a unique bird's-eye view that helps customers, investors and stakeholders understand the full scale, layout and surrounding environment of a site. It's also one of the most effective ways to document project milestones, highlight business locations and create compelling marketing content that stands out online.

This recent aerial image captures a shopping centre nestled against the stunning rainforest-clad mountains of Cairns, demonstrating how drone imagery can place a business within its broader landscape and community context.

If you're a Cairns or Far North Queensland business looking to elevate your marketing, showcase a development, document construction progress or create high-impact visual content, professional drone photography can help tell your story from a completely different perspective.

Captured at first light over the magnificent Mutton Hole Wetlands near Normanton, this image showcases one of the Gulf Country's hidden natural treasures. Located on the floodplain of the Norman River, the wetlands play an important role in supporting local birdlife, aquatic ecosystems, and seasonal migrations across North Queensland.

Sunrise is often considered one of the most picturesque times of day for landscape and wildlife photography. The low-angle light creates softer colours, greater contrast, and stunning reflections across the water, while the calm conditions often found at dawn help reveal details that disappear later in the day. It's also when many species are at their most active, making every sunrise unique.

As a professional Cairns photographer, moments like these are a reminder of why Queensland's landscapes continue to attract photographers, nature lovers, travellers, and businesses seeking authentic imagery that captures the character of our region.

What stands out most to you in this scene, the colours, reflections, or the peaceful atmosphere? Let me know in the comments.

Captured near Normanton, Queensland, this striking Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides) is one of Australia's most widespread and recognisable raptors. Known for its remarkable ability to "hover" while hunting, the Nankeen Kestrel uses its exceptional eyesight to scan for insects, small reptiles and rodents before diving with precision.

The species has a long history across Australia, thriving in open grasslands, farmland and outback landscapes for thousands of years. Its name comes from the distinctive nankeen-coloured plumage, a warm reddish-brown tone that makes this falcon instantly recognisable. Despite its relatively small size, the Nankeen Kestrel is a highly efficient predator and an important part of Australia's ecosystem.

Have you spotted a Nankeen Kestrel in Far North Queensland or elsewhere in Australia? Share where you've seen one in the comments.
