It has literally been months since I have had a family other than my own in front of my camera.

It has been 7 months since my last birth. It has been countless missed births, including this one, and no end in sight. I have felt the heartache for my families who's stories haven't been captured.

I haven't tried to keep up appearances like Im busy or make waves for change. Ive sat back and waited patiently for this nightmare to be over and questioned if its not over what will be next for Squirrel Lane- Echuca Birth Photographer, that I honestly cant answer. This season of being a "non essential worker" has been difficult to say the least. 2020 was looking so promising, with a record number of births and fresh new babies scheduled. It has been deflating.

Along comes this beautiful family that I first met at older sisters Remi's birth. How I wish I was there to meet Master Marlow as he entered the world but visiting him in home to see the strength and love of this family unit was the next best thing. I am so proud of how Jesse and Maddi have grown as parents and people in just 19 short months. Remi is actually the most adorable little being.

Thank you Maddie & Jesse for yesterday. Its clients like you that fill my heart with the passion that started this whole journey in the first place.

And this my friends will be the last birth I shoot for who knows how long as I am a non essential service.

I feel for my clients that were counting on me to be there for them. I feel for these women who can no longer have their friends and family celebrate their new lives until they get home. I feel uncertain for what this will mean for myself and my family.

I am so thankful that last week I was allowed to document the birth of this divine human who's birth story is about to begin on ig www.instagram.com/squirrellane . I am thankful to provide a distraction from the confronting and somewhat terrifying news that fill our feed. I am thankful that I got one last newborn squish before s**t started to go down.

Sweet little Djalu, oh the baby fever is real.
I had the honour of documenting his birth just 48 hours before, thank you Amber and Ki for allowing me to be there for you both.

I dont tend to offer in homes anymore but when I heard from Zoes mummy that she was having another baby I couldn't miss the chance to see how much Zoe had grown since her own in-home newborn or the chance to meet her little sister Grace. Plus their house is pretty darn amazing, paired with adorable babies my job was made easy.

Congratulations again Jenna & Tom. More to come tomorrow. x

See that look on my face, that is amazement. I am amazed that just 12 hours before I watched this little button take her first breath as her mother reached out to hold her in her arms and now I am luckily enough to hold her myself.

When I walk out of that room after a birth I dont consider my job done and walk away. I think about you often, how is your new life feeding, are you getting enough sleep, are you ok, do you need coffee. Being a birth worker is more than being in the presence of your birth, it is a little extra support if you need it, it is the feeling like somebody really cares for you through out your pregnancy journey, it is a text one year later wishing your babe a happy first birthday and it is me beaming with pride as I witness you bringing a new human in to the world.

You won't find me photographing anything else. I aim to be the worlds oldest birth photographer chucking in my falsies at 3am as I grab my walking stick and dash out the door with my photography gear in the other hand.

This is where I am supposed to be, this is what I am trained and experienced to do. I can instantly read light or lack there of, know exactly where I need to be at any given second, my life revolves around getting "the call" and I can talk birth all day long. I am there to hold your hand if your partner needs to duck out, I am there to offer you both drink, I give you space and leave the room when you need a moment and I know my place in the birthing space. In the 2,6,10, 14 hours we are together I am reliably there for you. This is more than a fun session for me, this shapes my lifestyle and I have no desire to be anywhere else.

We need to value these moments for their worth. They are over as quickly as they began, little brother meeting littler brother, had this family not seen the value of having myself their to document this exact moment it would just be a fading moment for the memory banks. These moments are too important to be overlooked, do yourself and your future self a favour and book a Fresh photographer. x
