Support Men's Health! The Movember Foundation is dedicated to tackling some of the biggest health issues faced by men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health struggles. By growing moustaches, Movember aims to spark conversation and raise funds for vital research and support programs.

This month, I’m contributing to the cause! Every image sold on my website, www.ryansphotoart.com, will have its proceeds donated to the Movember Foundation. Let’s make a difference together—visit and support today!

Here is a super cropped section of the moth wing i photographed yesterday showing the scales. These scales are actually quite interesting as their colour comes not from pigments but from a process called Structural Coloration resulting in some of the blackest blacks and whitest whites in the natural world.

In the moth wing scale photo below, the extreme blacks and whites are a result of structural coloration rather than just pigments. The black scales are so dark because they contain nanostructures that trap and absorb almost all incoming light. These structures bounce light around, causing it to cancel itself out, a process called destructive interference, making the surface appear ultra-black, similar to modern engineered materials like Vantablack.

On the other hand, the white scales appear so bright because of randomly arranged nanostructures that scatter light in all directions, reflecting nearly the entire spectrum of visible light. This high level of reflectivity makes the whites look incredibly bright, often surpassing most natural and synthetic white surfaces. This structural phenomenon, rather than pigment, creates the remarkable contrast between the black and white scales.
