I've often taken shots of Tasmanian Blennies poking their heads out, but this is my favourite.
They often poke their heads out of small holes and crevices and this particular individual was initially cautious, revealing only its fringed tentacles from the top of a hole in an old piling.
I waited at a distance, watching as it popped in and out, gradually edging closer in the hope it would become more comfortable with my presence. After capturing a few side-profile shots, I was delighted when, with my lens still close, it stared directly into it. Itβs hard not to anthropomorphise such an inquisitive, striking expression - thereβs something special about making direct eye contact with an animal.
