I've recenty spent a lot of time photographing Tasmanian Blennies - there are so many poking out of the old pilings- I assume defending the eggs they deposit in the little holes.

Tasmanian Blennies are common around our shallow waters, and are such fun fish to observe. They lay their eggs in small hollows and crevices, their watchful heads often emerging as they stand guard.

This was my second visit to Cathedral Caves on Tasmania's magnificent Tasman Peninsula. Diving it in January 2025 was fantastic, but this time was extra special because my buddy and I had it all to ourselves. Just two tiny divers in this magnificent dark watery space.

Cathedral Caves is said to be the largest sea cave system in Australia. The entry points from the open take you into a huge tall dome room aptly named the Cathedral and siphon off into smaller tunnels.

I rave every time about how awe inspiring this part of the country is, and diving beneath the dolerite sea cliffs down into this underworld is one of the highlights.

I've often taken shots of Tasmanian Blennies poking their heads out, but this is my favourite.

They often poke their heads out of small holes and crevices and this particular individual was initially cautious, revealing only its fringed tentacles from the top of a hole in an old piling.

I waited at a distance, watching as it popped in and out, gradually edging closer in the hope it would become more comfortable with my presence. After capturing a few side-profile shots, I was delighted when, with my lens still close, it stared directly into it. It’s hard not to anthropomorphise such an inquisitive, striking expression - there’s something special about making direct eye contact with an animal.

Waubs Bay - Bicheno, Tasmania

I feel this will become an annual pilgrimage! January weather in Tasmania suits me to a tee and the east coast town of Bicheno has a terrific little diving community.

G'day from the seals at Cape Hauy!

This is a spectacular dive site I was able to visit twice during my stay at Eaglehawk Dive Centre - amazing calm and sunny conditions under the Candlestick. After a few minutes ignoring me, this seal came closer and closer as other zoomed around in all directions.

The cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula are spectacular, but beneath the surface lies a completely different world - just as awe inspiring.

In Deep Glen Bay the shear dolerite rock continues underwater, dropping down to 40 metres not far from the cliff's edge. Here the seaweeds give way to colourful sponges, corals and teaming fish life.

Weather on the day looked highly questionable with harsh wind and periodic rain, but Mick found us the perfect site to see the glorious marine ecosystem here. Thank you Eaglehawk Dive Centre for a brilliant first dive.

What fantastical fairytale place is thisβ€½ I'm very lucky to have spent some time here this week, deliriously happy, gasping at fish, sponges, corals and other invertebrates - deep beneath the cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula.
