☆ DAY 10 in WA ☆

On this day in 2023...

If you've been following along my photojournal of our Western Australia leg of travel this time last year, you'll remember we had now been based in Kununurra for 10 days - an unexpected surprise but each day experiencing the magnificent landscape of the East Kimberley and the wonderful people of the area.

On this day, we once again day-tripped, out to the reknown El Questro Station, first hiking into Emma Gorge for an icy cold swim, then driving up to Brancos Lookout high above the Pentecost River. We were sorry to miss the oasis of Zebedee Springs, arriving minutes after the gate had been closed for the day at 2 pm.

Another incredible day in the East Kimberleys🌄.

On this day in 2023...

🌄 I first fell in love with the majestic flat-topped Cockburn (pronounced 'Co-burn') Range in Baz Lurhmann's epic movie "AUSTRALIA " back in 2008.

An hour drive from Kununurra, the landscape is dotted with boab trees, and the imposing 600m high range towers above the major river crossing of the mighty Pentecost River.

✨️I can not begin to describe the majesty of the landscape and the wide open space that reflected the brilliant reds oranges and pinks of the Kimberley sunset. I am hoping the visual might give you a glimpse of the beauty that surrounded us 🧡.

☆ DAY 7 in Western Australia ☆
ON THIS DAY in 2023...

Well, for those of you following along, I commenced my personal challenge a week ago of sorting and filing the thousands of photos I took on our wonderful trip around Australia - particularly our Western Australia leg of travel - one year to the day of that memory...
And so far, I've made it, despite a busy week! ..AND deleted many GB of unnecessary but lovely images...(Justine, you would be proud of me!)

On THIS day a year ago, we were still based in Kununurra, much to our delight and surprise.

After 2 scenic cruises and a flight, being blown away by the stunning landscape, we had a quieter day but still drove the Ivanhoe Crossing, visited Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve, then walked Thegoowiyeng - Kelly's K**b Lookout at sunset.

On this day...2023...

▪︎ Mirima National Park ▪︎

Our Caravan Park in Kununurra was only 100 metres from Mirima National Park, a culturally significant place for the local Miriwoong people.

Often called the mini Bungle Bungles, the NP is a popular area for walking and photography, its spectacular natural rock formations being its main feature. These colourful layers of sandstone are protected by a thin layer of black-green algae and lichens (as you can see here), which helps to protect the sandstone from weathering.

So beautiful, spiritual, and commanding...

☆ DAY 2 in Western Australia ☆
📍Kununurra

Based in Kununurra, we gave the van a well-deserved rest and hit the Great Northern Highway for a sight-seeing day, heading north firstly to The Grotto, descending 140 steps down into this magnificent gorge.

Found on Wikicamps close by the Wyndham Boab Prison Tree and simply marked "Aboriginal Cave Paintings" was this extraordinary overhanging cliff wall of art beside a lagoon. You can really feel Australia's heart, our indigenous history in its most natural environment.

Moving on, however, to the Boab Prison Tree was witnessing another side of Australia's dark history.

We remembered the 2nd anniversary of my father's passing at a place where he had previously stood - Wyndham Five Rivers Lookout, an observation deck where you can see five mighty Kimberley rivers meet and flow into the ocean! .

☆ DAY 7 Road Tripping from Qld to WA ☆
ON THIS DAY 2023...

We couldn't leave Katherine, NT, without dropping in to say hi to Lucy and Alexander from NuLook Painting Company - our gorgeous ex- neighbours from Toowoomba who are running a hugely successful station painting business in outback Australia.
We then hit the road aiming for the Western Australia border this day. The scenery began to change...the wide open spaces both extraordinarily beautiful and spiritual🌅.
