🐞 A tiny discovery
She came to show me her latest discovery — a tiny, beautifully patterned beetle she’d found in the garden.

But she didn’t stop at finding it. She wanted to know what it was, so off she went to look it up.
She’d been collecting ladybirds to introduce to our roses, where they can help us by eating aphids.
🌿
A little garden mission turned into an opportunity to observe nature, ask questions, research an insect and discover how different creatures play a role in our garden ecosystem.
These are some of my favourite kinds of learning moments. No planned lesson, no worksheet, no big adventure required. Just a curious kid, a tiny insect and a question she wanted to answer.

Curiosity leads to discovery. Discovery builds connection. And connection helps us learn to care.

🌿 Maybe we don’t need to do more. Maybe we just need to be.
Nature doesn’t rush to become something else. The trees don’t compare themselves to the flowers. The river doesn’t apologise for changing course. And the ocean doesn’t ask permission to be wild.
💚 Everything has its place, its purpose and its own way of being.
Perhaps there’s something we can learn from that.
In a world that constantly tells us to do more, achieve more and be more, nature invites us to slow down, take a breath and simply exist for a while.
🌱 So take a moment today. Step outside. Feel the sun, listen to the birds, watch the clouds drift by.
You don’t always need an adventure or a destination. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is reconnect with the world around you.

🌿🧭 Homeschoolmaxxing.

When your classroom is the forest, the beach, the rockpools, the river, the museum, the garden and basically anywhere curiosity takes you…

You start to realise just how much learning is happening everywhere.

🧬 Science can look like searching for wildlife.
Geography can be a muddy trail and a hand-drawn map.
History can be standing where something actually happened.
Environmental education can be seeing what needs protecting.
And sometimes the best lesson is simply taking the time to stop, look closely and ask:

🧐 “I wonder why…?”

Homeschooling gives us the freedom to follow those questions.

🌿 Not every adventure needs a worksheet.
Not every lesson needs a desk.
Sometimes the adventure IS the lesson.

💦 Today we celebrated World Rivers Day at Richmond Riverfest in Ballina with Richmond Riverkeeper , and it was one of those afternoons that reminds you how much there is to discover when you slow down and pay attention.
🔎 We peered into trays of tiny water bugs that help monitor river health, watched an incredible catchment model explain how water moves through our landscape, listened to the hidden sounds of the river through a hydrophone, built a raft from natural materials with Wise Earth Bush School, picked up a Pink Euodia tree to plant at home, and finished the day on the Richmond River aboard Ballina Byron Marine Adventures Cetacean One with marine mammal expert Dr Liz Hawkins from Dolphin Research Australia and OzFish Unlimited - Richmond River Chapter
💚 The biggest takeaway? A healthy river isn’t just about the water we see. It’s connected to the insects, shellfish, plants, wildlife, and people who care enough to protect it.
More events are happening across the Northern Rivers throughout the month, so there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved, learn something new, and connect with your local waterways. Check out for all the details.

😍 A big 2 days at
Located at the Showgrounds in Lismore this is Australia’s biggest gemshow.
🤓 We are the Junior Rockhounds, Homeschool Edition, and our kids volunteered at the popular activity Fossicking in the Hill, and had a great day exploring all the amazing earth treasures that Lismore Gemfest has to offer.
😍 Of course our rock lover shirts were there and you can grab them over at our website - supporting our homeschool adventures.

💛 Anzac Day
This week we have been exploring the themes around Anzac Day, war and the importance of honouring and remembering.
🥀 We have read books, went to an information session with Anzac memorabilia and contributed to our local Anzac service.
🫖 The girls helped prepare morning tea for attendees, made their information displays, laid a rosemary wreath by the cenotaph and read a poem as part of the service.
💛 These contributions and conversations are so important and help them find their place and meaning in community.

Getting creative for Mothers Day!
We made some cute tea light candles from plaster and created a ‘Pick & Paint’ stall at the local markets.
The day wasn’t too busy so we are going for round 2 at the on May 2nd.
