This was a tough bottle to shoot. The ‘Blanc de Blancs’ text is embossed and subtle on the label but was very faint in the photograph.

I ended up having to create separate layers in Photoshop for each letter and adding the emboss effect.

A bit of work for one bottle but worth it to see the end result.

are the sort of clients every freelancer wishes for. A steady supply of work over a number of years. No hassle, just a package of wine every few months.

If you make sending your bottles off to a studio part of your processes then it doesn’t become one of those jobs that gets left at the bottom of the to-do list.

There is real value in finding and sticking with your photographer. It means your style, especially when it comes to bottle shots, is consistent.

Flavour profile shots are a great way to visualise a tasting note. I’ve created a bank of individual ingredients so things that are out of season can be Photoshopped into the image. Can you spot which ones?

The product photography quality test. Run through this checklist to see if you’re on top of your bottle shots.

1. Are they professionally photographed?

A badly photographed bottle shot stands out like a sore thumb. Especially if they are sitting alongside good quality ones in a magazine or on a merchant’s website.

2. Are they photographed in a studio?

A nice image of your wine in situ may look good in your marketing material but a white or transparent background is essential if your wine is featured elsewhere.

3. Is the lighting style consistent across your range?

Different photographers will have different lighting styles and will probably not want to try and imitate someone else’s. So if you change who you use it will be obvious and you should probably get your whole range redone.

4. Is the process easy? Have you tried digital mock ups?

It’s a hassle finding bottles with perfect labels, wrapping them up and sending them out for delivery. Digital photography takes all this away. All you have to do is upload label/cap files.

5. Is the pricing worth it?

Photographers are notorious for keeping their pricing secret so you might need to make a few enquiries to get a good feel for the market rate. Remember that this isn’t everything though, make sure you take a look at portfolios and previous clients.

6. Are you happy with the results?

You should feel satisfied when you receive your images. Do you feel you got the service you paid for? When you see your product shots next to others in a review page of a magazine do they look good?

If you answered yes to all these questions then stick with what you’ve got! When you’ve found a good product photographer it’s worth hanging on to them!

But if you answered no to any of the above then it might be worth a change. You’ve spend a lot of time and effort in making your wine taste delicious so it deserves to look good too!

Newest addition to the Peel Famille is Teddy Laurence!

We knew before he was born that Teddy would have Down Syndrome. His and our lives will almost certainly have lower lows but higher highs. He has already shown us that he is a trooper and he will get every ounce of love our family can give him.

3 years ago to the day started using my digital photography studio service. Beginning with some 2019 vintages through to their latest 2024’s they have been regular repeat clients.

These bottle shots are created by taking the label print files emailed to me or uploaded through the website and then photoshopping them onto blank bottles. Having had a traditional studio for many years I have many bottle shapes and sizes meaning my blank bottle image library is fairly extensive!
