Okay, so I know this isn’t actually Western district but shearers really are the backbone of our agricultural nation. Almost every job has been mechanized, but no easy way has been devised for this job yet! www.facebook.com/share/1F78jBaWLF/?mibextid=

The heatwave that has impacted most of south-east Australia over the past week is expected to linger until at least Sunday. 🥵

For many outback NSW communities this will mean eight continuous days of over 45 degrees and record high temperatures.

For these shearers at Quondong Station in South Australia, three hours south of Broken Hill, the heat of 50 degrees in the sheds has been an obstacle they’ve had to endure. 🤠

After a quick break, Sam Bacon and his team cracked on to get the 8,500 head shorn. 🐑

Tonight’s woolshed is Skene.
Skene can be found in Strathkellar, Victoria. It was likely built between 1852 and 1858, to meet the provisions of the Settlement Act.
The original timber shingles can still be seen under the roof.
The Robertson family have owned the property since 1881, and it is still in full use. More details can be found on page 85 of my latest book on Historic Woolsheds.

Tonight's Woolshed is Carranballac. Carranballac is one of the four famous Chirnside woolsheds that formed part of the 250,000 acres that brothers, Andrew and Thomas, owned throughout Victoria in 1870. Carranballac was the property that was held longest by the family, who retained it until the 1980s. The other three sheds are Werribee Park, (South) Mokanger and Mt. William. These photos were taken a few years ago and the property has now changed hands. The four Chirnside sheds are included in my latest book on Historic Woolsheds, beginning page 130. Message for local stockists or visit www.shearinginvictoriaswesterndistrict.com to order your copy, or a copy of the calendar.
