I had a so much fun with this photoshoot of mother and daughter, and at the end I did some fun photos to finish my roll of film. We used mums jeans and hairband ( as a top) - so I could use one of these photos for publicity. Mmm, what a stir it created!
I was phoned up by people telling me I was a pe*****le, that it was p**n, indecent and so on. Others quickly booked in for a shoot because they loved it. The mother was told to sue me 🙀

The mother quickly jumped to my defence and said ‘ if you can think such terrible thoughts about a photo of a child, perhaps I should report you to the police’ - nothing indecent here, in fact I love it 🥰
Over 30 years perceptions and attitudes change.
I still love this photograph and the entire shot I did.

I trudged up the sandy beach for half a kilometre with heavy 120 Mamiya gear and tripod to get this shot. Stinking, rotten, but fascinating, what I was looking at had the attention of the public. No one knew what it was - really was.
There were whispers of ancient sea creatures, alien life forms and still the whispers continued.
It was huge - a few meters high and at least five meters long.

My black and white photograph was taken using a circular polariser so I could darken the sky and create contrast.
Hand printed in my darkroom using multigrade paper and a grade 3. The sand was burnt in for a few extra exposures. I also used 400 ISO film, set at 800 iS0, upped the dev temp, and processed normally. I wanted grain. How I loved the look of grain! 3200 ISO being one of my fav films.
So, what is it ?

Dappled light can be very tricky to shoot in. Apart from shooting this image in black and white, and hand printing - I added another process to give me a print that looked a bit like a drawing. Any guesses as to what I did? Film image Hand printed darkroom image.

My second image cropped! Here is the full version. We shot right on sunset, and whilst the sky was superb, I crossed my fingers for the hard light of unfiltered sun to pop through and create contrast. And it did.

I’m having a ‘dedication to film’ week and sharing some film images - darkroom printed by me, over a 20 year period.
These images with a Tiger moth made the cover of a Qantas inflight magazine in the mid 1990’s.
The prints are stunning.

I came across this letter ( yes letter) today from my days as a darkroom printer in QLD National parks head office. Thanks to who put me forward as a good darkroom printer for a very significant assignment printing photographs of Aboriginal Rock Art and relics.
And boy! It was hard when lots of the negs where almost clear - underexposed to the max. Luckily had created multigrade paper with the use of filters. Saved loads of money buying different paper grades.

Hi Nanny, i went to great lengths to locate and dig out many of your flowering bulbs when you left us. Your crabs claw ginger is in flower and this beauty has multiplied and thrives in its new home. Ferns have been reported and I've added some hanging baskets full of succulents.
Always thinking of you as my garden flowers 🌹
