My kids found a small snake in our pool yesterday...about the 4th snake species I've now rescued from the pool and released into the bush on our place near Coffs Harbour, NSW. Sadly, in ground pools act like a (potentially deadly) magnet for all sorts of beautiful creatures likes snakes, frogs, spiders, insects etc. This of course is a Common Bandy Bandy (Vermicella annulata)...only the 4th one I've seen and a new welcome addition to our property's species list.

It was nice to be able to add Short-eared Possum (Trichosurus caninus) to our property's list last night near Coffs Harbour, NSW (lots of Common Brushtails around but the short-eared last night was a first). I was thinking it looked pretty fat when my wife Del pointed out the tail sticking out of its pouch. Will aim for more photos tonight, hopefully with a baby's head visible.

A beautiful big Brown Tree Snake (Bioga irregularis) that turned up in my front yard this morning near Coffs Harbour, NE NSW. Unusual to see one that big (c. 160 cm) and in broad daylight.

Not one for the Arachnaphobes...a spectacular Hadronyche macquariensis, a species of funnel-web spider endemic to the NSW North Coast. This male entered our house this morning, presumably on the lookout for a lady spider, but was found by my 4 year old daughter Lucy instead. I caught/photographed/relocated it to some nearby bushland so it's all good, but it is of course a highly venomous spider and serves as a reminder to be vigilant as to what might be crawling around your house and kids. Thanks to Declan Hegge for confirmation as to what it is.

a mother and baby Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) seen in Guy Fawkes River NP yesterday (NE NSW, 13/2/2022). It's always inspiring watching these agile creatures scramble up rock faces well beyond our abilities.

I've been hearing koalas call in our valley for 5 yrs now but actually seeing one is easier said than done. Finally, we got lucky today with a healthy mother and joey on our property in a Sydney Blue Gum within 100m of our house. Bonville, NE NSW, 17/10/2021.

Another common reptile seen at Torrington today (far northern NSW). This one is really widespread (Ctenotus taeniolatus - Copper-tailed Skink) but I've rarely seen them sit still long enough for a decent photo.

It seems like years since my last post but this beautiful Southern Spotted Velvet Gecko (Oedura tryoni) was very photo worthy today. Torrington, NE NSW, 4/5/2021. Quite a large gecko and well camouflaged amongst the lichen on the granite outcrop that it was seen.

The frogs are going nuts at my place at the moment following 385 mm of rain in the last 5 days. At least 5 species are calling including this Red-eyed Tree Frog (Litoria chloris) - very easy to track down thanks to that distinctive, loud, throaty call.

Danhatchia copelandii, now known from 32 individuals following a second year of surveys near Coffs Harbour, northern NSW. Photographed just now (23/10/2019). Numbers are up slightly from last year but still confined to an area of less than 20 x 20 m. It's likely to be more widespread though given it's so hard to detect (short flowering period, tiny flowers on plants 10-15 cm tall, brown stems blending into the leaf litter background in dimly lit subtropical rainforest, etc.).
